Militant Language: a play with sand

Running at the Know Theatre through mid-November is a dramatic tale of a tragic misunderstanding at a construction site in war-torn Iraq. I was ready, going in for a full blown political statement on the war, but thats not what it was at all. A complex tale of soldiers, on their level not a higher political one.
The show was well cast including Jeff Groh who was totally believable as Capt. Davis Crane, he's either been in the military or has captured every conceivable stereotype about commanding troops. The stage set impressed as a construction site with scaffolding all around and this being Iraq the ever present sand.
One thing about sand, if you are sensitive to dust, sit well back because some scenes heck up a heck of a dust storm, gives you a new appreciation for what they have to deal with over there.

As a bonus, we helped celebrate Doug's 31^st birthday and ate Greater's ice cream cake.

Death Cab for Cutie

Were oozing talent out of their pores, the kind of talent that makes you feel so mundane just being in the general vicinity with them. These guys have been growing on me for awhile and somehow I missed them if/when they came through Cincinnati so the only option was a road trip to Columbus.
I didn't feel as old as I thought I would, of course that was after the real teenie boppers there to see Tegan & Sarah left.

The crowd really started getting into it, after Death Cab for Cutie hit their stride a half dozen songs in and then got to follow you the ode to Romeo and Juliette, the song about love, death and Catholic School which was a downer but in a good way and went right into the more upbeat songs that made me want to dance, but since my dancing is not unlike a someone with a recent brain injury that impairs the part of the brain controlling motor functions and self awareness and is usually carried on with autistic determination, I decided to refrain and spare other concert goers the embarrassment.

The Arena District is a really impressive place, I hope the Banks have that kind of feel when finished, the odd thing was at 7pm on a Wednesday night the place was a ghost town. Nothing like downtown Cincinnati is getting to be on a normal weekday evening.

Beer for Bloggers @Mortons

Chimay Beer tasting at Morton's last night with a few of the more charming Cincinnati bloggers, what did I do to deserve this?
Free (excellent) beer and good company in an outstanding location, overlooking Fountain Square.

The Chimay beer pairings were interesting and complimented each other perfectly, Jason did a good job matching them up. Some of my friends would be surprised to find I enjoyed the tuna tartar and smoked salmon, but with beer this good...

The red label Chimay was perfect for cutting the richness of the super decadent chocolate volcano. I noticed the other table had a chocolate mouse, after an offer to try it, I couldn't resist, it was so rich my eyes were crossing.

I've been cutting way back on the beer since the end of summer and now I'm a light weight. I was drinking my beers and half of Ms. 5chw4r7z's, by time wicked-thirty rolled around I was literally staggering home, must have been a sight.

too close for comfort

As long as the spider was at the far, un-used end of the porch the spider was a novelty, something to go out and look at in the evening to see what was going on. to stare out while talking on the phone. But one day the spider worked his way down and made a web in the middle of the porch, way to close to the table we sit at and read.
This was no good so it was time for the spider to go.
Imagine the fireball created by a lighter and an aerosol can.
This fireball was probably at least twice that big.
The spider was simply gone, I couldn't even find random burnt traces.

Banana Bean Cafe

We headed up to the frozen tundra of Northeast Ohio over the weekend but before we left I got a hot tip from a Cincinnati ex-pat living in C-Bus that we had to try out a new restaurant just south of downtown.
I was just a little disappointed pulling into the parking lot Friday afternoon, it sure didn't look like much, an old gas or service station?
But don't let the unassuming exterior scare you off, once inside the Banana Bean had a warm, beachy feel almost like vacation at the ocean.
The food is some of the most flavorful I've had this side of Nada, the Floridabean Jerk Chicken was incredible.
I'm going to be making excuses to go to C-Bus just to stop here again.

Parker Flats Friday, Saturday edition

Email from MED;

Great news! We are starting to convey units at Parker Flats. Our first two residents have completed their purchase and moved in. Units in the A tower are moving quickly with the expectation that the next set of units should be complete within seven to ten days. The elevator shaft is being framed and is expected to be operational within two weeks. The fire system and egress paths are complete so the entire focus will be on finishing and conveying units.

Cincinnati Supper Club XVII

The Seventeenth Cincinnati Supper Club gathering at Mary's always warm and comfy home was another fantastic evening with interesting conversation. I got a really cool overview of jet engines, engineers aren't always boring!

8am West Campus

I have about a twenty minute walk from the Reccenter to my office in the morning after working out. I always consider it a bonus workout and a chance to cool off and get my head together for the coming day.
Most everyone I work with thinks I'm crazy and wonders why I do it. well while you are sitting in your car beeping and cursing at the people in front of you, I'm smiling and walking towards this,

No ones talking about Iraq now

The surge is paying off in spades now, violence is the lowest its ever been, and the Iraqi security forces are coming online faster than expected.
Obama last year drew a line in the sand and thats where he was going to define his foreign policy on the mistake of the surge. Guess the judgment he talks about all the time was way off on that.
But the biggest factor in reduced violence has to go to the thousands of drones operating in the skies over Iraq. The Air Force insists that only pilots can operate a drone, so they've been scooping up everyone thats ever used a flight simulator to operate them.
