protest art

2008 really was still at the dawn of social media. Even though facebook was launched in 2004 and twitter in 2006, the vast majority of people hadn't embraced them yet. So how did someone express frustration do back in the stone age of social media? If that someone owned a building on a prominent street near an entrance/exit of an expressway what they did was protest art. I've been wanting to get pictures of this place for years, but like I said, the street is busy and not exactly pedestrian friendly. But luckily the last trip back to Youngstown in February on a cool Saturday morning I was finally able to stop.
Back when I still lived in Youngstown I would have thought this guy was a wacko, and maybe he is. But fast forward a millennia in social media where we've seen people shot for not have a front license plate or for any real reason at all and the guy doesn't seem so crazy anymore.
Frustrated for sure though.
And an accidental artist.

Friday Fish Fry: Bridgetown Finer Meats

In years past we would wait until Good Friday to roll through Bridgetown because all the church fries would be done for the year. But When we saw the forecast, warm and sunny we decided not to take any chances and get their crunchy fish right away. We've visited almost all of the highly rated fish fries over the years and Bridgetown tops them all. I know, it isn't fair to compare volunteers at churches to the trained professionals at Bridgetown but that's how it goes.
How good are they? Last year on their best day they served 1835 fish sandwiches on Good Friday. This year they already had a Friday where they moved 1950 sandwiches.
You still have a couple Fridays left, don't let this Lent end without one trip to Bridgetown.

The Grand Baldwin Building

Soapbox Media hosted an event to wrap the Walnut Hills On The Ground embedded journalism series at the iconic Grand Baldwin Building.
The Baldwin is located at 655 Eden Park Dr. at the southern gateway to Walnut Hills and main entrance to Eden Park. Through adaptive reuse of the Grand Baldwin Building built in 1921, development partners Neyer Properties and CASTO are adding over 190 urban loft apartments to housing in Walnut Hills. The apartments are expected to be open to residents by mid June.
As they are still in progress I didn't take too many pictures of the apartments themselves. But really the views out will be the focal point anyhow. The preview started out with various speakers but the highlight for me was U.C.'s Associate Director of Research at Economics Center Chris Nicak. Mr Nicak highlighted many of the positive economic milestones Walnut Hills is hitting to outpace the city as a whole in jobs and wages.

Fort Thomas

I'm always up for a new coffee shop so when Ms 5chw4r7z spotted one in Fort Thomas and asked if I wanted to check it out I was like hell yeah!
Fort Thomas Coffee is a cute little shop and there must be a tight little neighborhood here because everyone seemed to know each other which I always take as a good sign. I was a little amused to find they offered Highlander Grog, amused but also not mad because Grog is a guilty pleasure of mine and I'll grab a cup when I see it around.

While we were there I spotted a picture of what looked like a fort and my mind was blown. I had never thought about Fort Thomas having a fort! So we went exploring.
The US Army established the site in 1887, the water tower was built in 1890. There are a couple cannons captured in Havana during the Spanish-American War. The place was inactivated in 1964 but many of the buildings are still in use. If the government ever decides to do anything with it, it seems like prime real estate.

the apartments AT580

AT580's tagline "live above it all" isn't pure hyperbole. The apartment/office building is located on 6th between Walnut and Main and sandwiched between the north and south run of the streetcar. AT580 isn't for the budget conscious but what you are paying for are incredible views of the city. While I would have loved to see the day time views we didn't make in until after the sun had set. Even so the views off the balconies and out the windows were impressive.

a junkyard for buildings

I tripped across this place by happenstance. U.C. is at least hanging on to interesting architectural features from buildings that have been demolished. Now we just need to see some interesting reuse of these pieces.
