New Riff Distilling

I always find it fascinating when people take these leaps of faith. The owner of the Party Source had a good thing going but he really wanted to distill whiskey. Do to federal laws its illegal to own breweries or distillers and to own bars and stores where they are sold. I always thought was dumb but then I guess if there wasn't a law Miller and Bud would own every bar in the universe.
But he sold his share in the party Source anyhow and built a distillery with the knowledge he wouldn't have income for years.
Right now New Riff is getting by on renting the event space. And the space is amazing inside and out.

one of Cincinnati's best kept secrets

No one knows these old houses on Arch St exist downtown. Or if they know they exist, they don't know about them.
Which is a shame because no one will mourn their loss when they're torn down for Western & Southern's next office tower.
UDATE:It turns out that Ann Senefeld over at Digging Cincinnati just dug into the history of these homes on her blog Digging Cincinnati History.

Western & Southern spokespeople insist nothing will happen to the police station. But just the fact they talked about it makes me wonder. Right now Western & Southern stores lawn maintenance equipment in it.

Lower Price Hill Education Matters/Community Matters

People shoot out 8th St on their way from Price Hill to downtown and vise versa, but zipping along is any thought given at all as to whats hiding behind the fire department and a couple other run down buildings on 8th near State St.?
I've heard of the renovations going on at St. Michael’s, the second oldest Catholic Church in Cincinnati but I really knew nothing else about the Lower Price Hill Historic neighborhood. I reached out to the Director of Community Programs Mike Moroski for a tour around St. Michael’s and the neighborhood.
It was inspiring, St. Michael’s and the surrounding buildings are undergoing over $8 million in renovations that will transform the properties and the ongoing mission of Lower Price Hill Education Matters/Community Matters. St. Michael’s itself will be come an event space available for rental and the former school next door will have a pantry on the ground floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors will house the GED programs and a Cincinnati State satellite campus. Mike Moroski told me how LPHCS has had great success helping residents in the neighborhood obtain their GEDs. They felt getting the adults acclimated to a classroom environment would give them the foundation they needed to then move on to a more traditional college after they obtained an associate degree.

The neighborhood has its challenges to be sure. It has been cut off from the river by the new 6th St viaduct. It is also hemmed in one one side by heavy industry and the other side by steep hills. They have seen a few advances however, Bloc Minitries has opened a pizza shop. The shop hires people from the neighborhood providing them with work experience. Somewhere down the road Moroski would like to see a small grocer with healthy option located in the neighborhood also.

downtown parking

Do you remember when it was announced that there would be transformers installed in three place along the streetcar route to provide consistent power? And there was that business owner on Court St who cried foul because he would lose 4 parking spots for his customers? Never mind there would be a streetcar full of people stopping at either end of his block every 15 minutes.
Vice Mayor Mann and the mayor took and ran holding it up as a lack of transparency from the former administration.
I thought about this as I rode my bike past and I had to stop and document the lack of parking in this area.
Now I realize why this business owners concerns were dropped so fast.
Here is the spot in question

Yep, parking as far as the eye can see. Maybe two of the biggest surface parking lots downtown outside of The Banks.

Five Points Alley Biergarten

Biked up the hill to Five Points Alley located in the first Cincinnati neighborhood to receive a Bike Friendly Neighborhood designation from Queen City Bike. And you know what, it made the Rhinegeist taste even better.

Bad veins popup concert in OTR

As the Official Beer of Bunbury, Warsteiner has been hosting a series of popup concerts in OTR to ramp up interest in both the music and the beer as the festival grows closer. The latest was the Bad Veins playing atop Lavomatic. Between the music and the Streetpops made from Warsteiner beer it was a pretty cool evening.
