Remember back in the day when you would see regular updates for months before a new business opened in OTR?
And now so many are opening they don't even bother anymore.
So imagine me riding the bike home from Findlay Market, doing a double-take and thinking "what the hell? where did that come from?"
I did a quick u-turn and went back for a look and the place looked cool enough that I wanted to go back and check it out, so that is just what we did.
I love that new places are opening on Pleasant. It still seems like people from outside the city think of OTR as two blocks of Vine St. plus Washington Park and we can usually roll right into a bar on Republic St. But once the weather warms we'll see if that holds true for Standard Beer as it is a block off Washington Park and I can see people pouring in there when programming ends in the park for the evening.
Standard Beer isn't a typical bar, it almost feels like a cafe. There is a picnic table, a little social area with chairs and a couch, three booths and a sleek bar. They have a pretty cool vibe going on and some interesting looking beers I've never seen before. And a selection of wine.

3 Points Urban Brewery

3 Points Urban Brewery is set to open June 1st in Cincinnati's Pendleton neighborhood. Why 3 points? Pendleton is triangle shaped and in a nod to Pendleton's art based history 3 Points is focused on fine art and design as a backdrop to their beer.
The brewery is wide open with roll-up doors on two of its sides, it has an outdoor feel deep into the interior.
All the sudden Broadway St. between 12th and 13th is a happening place with six restaurants and 3 Points Urban Brewery open or about to open.

The Bay Horse Cafe

The Bay Horse Cafe reopened last night. I have a good feeling this is going to be the neighborhood bar all the other bars try to be. Just a little off the beaten path but still close to all the action. The bar is stuffed full of history, old news paper clippings, old pictures and some old fixtures.
The Bay Horse Cafe has had a storied past for sure, the structure was built in the mid 1800's. The Bay Horse bar itself survived Prohibition, and a couple of moves as buildings were demo'd out from under it. The bar was originally located where Government Square is now and where the horse wandered in off the street thus coining the name.
I remember walking past it when I moved to Cincinnati in 2004 and looking in I thought, "no way I'm going in there" It looked sketchy as hell. I think it shut down a year or so after due way too many police calls and a fatal shooting in broad daylight. Then came 2012 and the Aronoff filed paperwork to demo the Bay Horse building. I don't remember all the details except that people were upset, and unlike the Dennison, the Bay Horse survived to live another day. Back then the Historic Conservation Board wasn't stocked with the mayor's pro-demo buddies thank goodness. A facebook friend said, "The Bayhorse was one of the dirtiest, smokiest, and drug filled bars 15 years ago. So happy to see it come back looking spanking new. Tribute to how much things have changed downtown."
We should all be glad it did, the bar and the space is amazing. Bring your thirst, those schooners are huge.

Once upon a time The Bay Horse sold more Little Kings than any other bar on the planet. Jenny swung through Cincinnati for a minute yesterday to try and help them get that honor back.

Rhinegeist fundraiser for Newport DIY

Able Projects hosted local skateboarders at Rhinegeist fundraising for Newport DIY, a Newport Ky skate-park. I was never coordinated enough to skateboard but one of the things I always found amazing is that the skateboarders would continually find unused/unloved places and turn them into something cool. Newport DIY is one of those places.
Rhinegeist is pretty cool all by itself but it was even cooler Saturday night.
