Globili

Globili

Monday afternoon on Fountain Square marked the beta test launch of Globili.

This new application allows Cincinnati to be friendly to everyone in the world, English speakers and not. Says Councilperson Cecil Thomas on the launch of Globili. Forward thinking for our city internationally, the city that sings.
Globili

From Globili's FB page, "People who like to travel but don't always know the native language of the place they are visiting. They can text or they understand how to scan a QR code, but they don't want to necessarily download or install a new app and with Globili they don't have to. These people want a convenient and easy to use solution to make them more comfortable and confident with navigating and exploring foreign countries. Globili provides them that peace of mind for free."

Globili provides clients with a simple dashboard to create and translate messages into over 50 languages, upload images, add marketing pages, track and organize signs, documents, ads and packaging.

Talking to Meg Olberding from the City Managers office after the launch I found out there is a huge demand in Cincinnati for bilingual signage. Groups such as Cincinnati Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati have lobbied hard for them. With that need and the World Choir Games less than 100 days away now Globili will fill an unmet need in the City.

Here is how it works, scan a QR code on a sign, or text the short code provided, then select the language you need from the drop-down box.

Streetpops

Streetpops

1905 11 year old Frank Epperson accidentally invents the Popsicle when he leaves his soda pop outside with a swizzle stick and it freezes overnight.

1924 Epperson applies for a patent on his frozen confectionery. The Creamsicle and Fudgesicle soon follow.

1989 Good Humor, a subsidiary of Unilever, buys the rights to the name Popsicle.

2011 Streetpops hit the streets of Cincinnati blowing everyones minds at the City Flea, Findlay Market and everywhere in between.

2012 Streetpops opens a brick and mortar shop and invites us and a bunch of yelper's check it out before the grand opening on March 30th.

Figures, temps in the 80s last week would have been perfect for these piquant little streetpops. But come last night and the air is cool and crisp, a more seasonable March evening. It didn't cool our enthusiasm for eating streetpops at the soft opening though, no way.
Streetpops come in two sizes now, a regular sized pop and a half sized pop. If you haven't had the opportunity to try one yet this is what you get. Flavors that seemingly wouldn't go together but somehow create something incredible, the pineapple habenaro for instance. Then there also flavors that are slam dunks, like the chocolate sea salt, how can that not work? All made with high quality ingredients.
Make sure to walk all the way to Liberty on Main St during the March Final Friday to Streetpops and get yourself something amazing.

Carpe Piscis:St James White Oak

friday Fish Fry St James

The latest installment of our tour de fish frys and I've been pleasantly surprised how good they've all been. We've had quality fish at each stop. So now I'm reduced to splitting hairs. The fish was crispy outside tender inside and savory. The crinkle cuts fries, sadly weren't, they were the opposite of crispy. If you're in the camp not liking crispy fires you might like them, but I didn't. The cole slaw was old skool, I liked it, some didn't. over all I gave St James a three. It wasn't bad but not everyone can be Mary Queen of Heaven.

Margaret was instrumental in getting the St James fish fry up and running. And like everyone else thought we were a little insane.
She told us the people from Mary Queen of Heaven gave them a bunch of help getting started and it shows in the fish at least.

Like some of the other fries, a make shift kitchen out back.

A low ceiling makes for a cramped and very loud dinner vs. the gyms where the other fish frys are held.

your anti-fish fry

Colonial Cottage Inn
which it turns out is not alot

I'm from the north were there's nothing really sacred about fried chicken, it was just something you ate when mom was bowling and dad took you all to KFC because he doesn't cook.
I always figured you had to go to the south for the good stuff, quality fried chicken.
I didn't know the south considered it a sport as well!
When Paige invited us to the all you can eat fried chicken night at the Colonial Cottage in Erlanger I wasn't going to compete, it just sounded like fun.
And delishiness.
You know what would be awesome2? all you can eat fried chicken skin!
OK, maybe it doesn't sound as cool once I say it out loud, but that is the best part.
Colonial Cottage

well hello chicken
Colonial Cottage

ok, this tripped my gag meter, cheese covered salmon
Colonial Cottage

even though its all you can eat fried chicken you have to save room for the pies at Colonial Cottage, I hear thats what they're known for.
Colonial Cottage pie

this was super cool in my book, there were four firefighters at the cashier in front of me. Matt the manager/owner? walked up grabbed their bills and basiclly told them their money was no good there.
Thats old school supporting your community there.

IRL

If you hang out in social media long enough you're gonna hear the term IRL. In Real Life as opposed to life online. But slowly those lines are getting blurred. I don't get personal on my blog often because I'm not good at it, but I'm going to give it a shot for Raymond 'Buz' Buse who passed away yesterday morning. Out of the blue, it hit me like a ton of bricks(news of his passing). Buz was tireless Cincinnati promoter, he loved the city and its people. Buz seemed to always be in the right place at the right time to put a virtual hand on a virtual shoulder and point someone in the right direction.
You could see how I'd be instantly attracted to him and I became a huge fan. He'd come up with a wild idea and I'd get a dm (direct message, a person to person private tweet) or a bunch from him. I've heard similar stories from many others, I don't know where Buz got the energy.
At any rate, I never met Buz face to face but I'll still miss him in my life.

People love having a good time.
People love eating.
You can thank God for realizing that good times and good food go together like peanut butter and chocolate and then combining both of them into fish frys.
And it also took three fish frys for me to realize this, so far, the people working these fish frys are having as much or more fun than the customers. Makes sense, the Debby Downers will weed themselves out of the equation leaving people who really want to work.
So the customers are having good times, the people working are having good times, and we're having good times.

That brings us up to the fish fry at Bridgetown Finer Meats. Now someone said that its not really fair to compare BFM with the church fries because BFM are trained professionals. I say, life ain't fair.
Bridgetown employs a their own beer batter for a super crispy crust and Servatti bakes them custom 5' long loaves of bread for the sandwiches. Everyone also raved about the mac&cheese and the fruit cup. I gave BFM 4.5 fish.
Bridgetown, is mostly take out, by a vast majority. Out of 1480 orders they processed, I bet 1465 of them were carried out of the store or handed out the take out window, the cars poured through non stop and they had two police officers directing traffic.

One last thing to do before you go, you have to walk a few store fronts down and visit Jenny's Homemade Cookies. Big rich and melt in your mouth good. You're going to be stuffed from the fish fry, but when you eat Jenny's cookies later on in the evening you'll thank me.
You're welcome.
