Sleepy Bee Cafe

The Sleepy Bee Cafe is a comfortable new cafe in Oakley serving breakfast and lunch. We dropped in for one of each, I got breakfast and Ms. 5chw4r7z lunch. The food was good the coffee hot, how much more you can ask than that.
Sleepy Bee and a couple other places got me thinking the other day. All the new restaurants/cafes/coffee shops these days are putting as much thought into the design of the space as they are their food. Our visual senses are stimulated as much as taste and smell.
How lucky are we to be living in these times?

Brazee Street Studios

Brazee Street Studios is a solar-powered beekeeping monarch way station that also doubles as a studio for trades as old as civilization itself, glass and metal working. My initial thought was "these people are a bunch of hippies!" but meaning it as the highest possible compliment. Nothing more impressive than a bunch of artist living the life.
But the whole focus of this visit, no matter how cool all the environmental and sustainable stuff, was the SOG, specifically glass casting, an art begun by the Egyptians back in antiquity. Brazee's glass hot shop is relatively new and looks it, the place is shiny and clean.

JW walked us through the process, glass casting uses sand casting to get the desired shapes, once he finished sifting the sand the shapes were pressed into the sand to create the mold. I used the rear cog off my track bike.

Once that's done nothing left to do but ladle the 2300° glass out of the oven and into the mold.

While not as dramatic as glass blowing, this was still amazing, and the amount of radiant heat was tremendous, even from 5 or 6' away. Our cameras and phones were getting noticeably hot in little time.
Brazee Street Studios
Still red hot but cool enough now to go into a tempering oven to slowly cool over the next few days. This isn't an art for the impatient.
Brazee Street Studios
Brazee Street Studios is a collection of highly talented artists providing classes and studio space. They have the bases covered for anything you could want. If you have any interest at all in glass work, whether fusing, blowing or casting I recommend you check out Brazee Street Studios, find out more on their website and also their upcoming Hot Glass Casting Workshop September 22nd..

Hyde Park near, but not too close

Fire, it brings out those primal instincts, feasting , drinking and story telling. Thousands, tens of thousands, hell hundreds of thousands of years sitting around fires and now its ingrained in us. Not just sitting around them either, seems like we try to integrate fire into almost everything we do.

Had me thinking of a former life back in Ytown. It had snowed all week and probably had 18" on the ground by Saturday night when we all headed over to a friend who had a good brush pile going along with wood from remodeling that he was doing. We lit that baby off and up it went, we would scoot farther back as more and more of it caught.

It was one of those brisk 15°Northeast Ohio nights and when our backs got too cold we'd turn around and watch the steam pour off the fronts of our pants as they cooled quicky in the air. Ten minutes or so and we'd whip back around. We jammed a couple cases into a snow drift and started into telling each other lies about back then.
Before we knew it the beers gone the fires dieing out and we're pushing each others cars out of the deep snow and heading home.

the secret

McyD's Oakley

Everyone always askes, "5chw4r7z, how do you stay in shape eating all those Big N' Tastys?" Turns out little did I or anyone else know, the Big N' Tasty has actually been the secret to my success.
According to Men's Health, the Big N' Tasty is the best fast food burger you can eat.
They said "Created to compete with the Whopper, this generous patty edges out the iconic BK burger by a full 210 calories and brings a nice balance of protein, fat, and carbs to the table."
It should actually be an important component of a serious workout program.
Who knew?

well hello there Mr. Big N' Tasty, You wild, beautiful thing. You crazy handful of nothin'

I have to say, at first blush this McDonalds looked nice. But by time I was done eating I was thinking, damn is this place filthy. I don't get it, if other high traffic restaurants can stay clean, whats the deal here? It almost has to be cultural doesn't it?

Watch This, Indiana Jones

Watch This

What a turn out last night, congrats to Watch This and the Al & Al show for putting on the event. It sounds like around 270 people showed up to watch. From those two watching AFI's top 100 movies in their apartment to 5 months later hosting almost 300 people to join in is just incredible.
An avalache of excitement it has to be those those two I'm sure.
Back to Indiana Jones, #60 on AFI's top 100 films of all time. Just watching the opening scene I took a deep breath and thought "wow, forgot just how good this movie was" I've haven't seen it in years, the momeries fade and I kind of remember it being a little hokey, and maybe it was a little, but it was good. All the scenes were tight, every angle, shadow or laugh was exactly where it should be to convey the mood of that scene. Looking back now 30yrs, you can really see how it has influenced so many action films, most notably the famous swordsman scene where Indy pulls out his gun and shots him.
Fantastic movie, event and crowd.
Good job Alex and Allison.

SUSHI RAMPAGE!!!

I know you rely on the 5chw4r7z for new places, trends and happenings in Cincinnati, a responsibility I take very seriously. Well, when I tell you about this latest one, your heads will explode.
SUSHI!
Yes, I know you're scratching your head wondering what this strange Japanese word means. Its a strange concoction of fish and rice wrapped up in a gooey roll. Drop a paper thin slice of ginger and a dab of green wasabi on it and you're good to go.
If they bring one of these "sushi" joints to Cincinnati, they'll be printing money I tell ya.
The craziest part of the whole evening, besides this strange new form of food is I went with two Indians, and tree-hugger and a feminist.
Of course if you get brave enough to give it a try, you may want to go for the first time with a few normal people, when I go, I go large, that's how I roll.

SUSHI RAMPAGE!!!

SUSHI RAMPAGE!!!

Apparently spoons and forks don't exist on the other side of the international date line.
So I put a big drop of wasabi on the sushi and veganjacob is like "you don't wanna...."
I pop it in my mouth, Mmmm and smile.
"OK maybe you do..."

Fat Burger

Fat Burger

Kate The Great and I have a mini tweetup/blogger-bash at Fat Burger and gossip about virtual friends in real life, strange but more instantaneous.
Talking to people in real life seems so personal these days.
Or is that just me?
By the way, those pictures are larger than life, just so you know. Its like ordering off McDonald's dollar menu but paying $8 for it. Only better tasting.
There are bigger burgers on the menu, its just I made a mistake of looking at the nutritional info on the website and opted for the Baby Fat burger.
That and I like saying baby fat.
baby fat.
Fat Burger
I was expecting something more impressive for the exterior, like a temple to awesome burger taste that these things deserve. I guess I should be happy that here and there someone says hey lets pull it back a little.
