Brazee Street Studios

Brazee Street Studios is a solar-powered beekeeping monarch way station that also doubles as a studio for trades as old as civilization itself, glass and metal working. My initial thought was "these people are a bunch of hippies!" but meaning it as the highest possible compliment. Nothing more impressive than a bunch of artist living the life.
But the whole focus of this visit, no matter how cool all the environmental and sustainable stuff, was the SOG, specifically glass casting, an art begun by the Egyptians back in antiquity. Brazee's glass hot shop is relatively new and looks it, the place is shiny and clean.

JW walked us through the process, glass casting uses sand casting to get the desired shapes, once he finished sifting the sand the shapes were pressed into the sand to create the mold. I used the rear cog off my track bike.

Once that's done nothing left to do but ladle the 2300° glass out of the oven and into the mold.

While not as dramatic as glass blowing, this was still amazing, and the amount of radiant heat was tremendous, even from 5 or 6' away. Our cameras and phones were getting noticeably hot in little time.
Brazee Street Studios
Still red hot but cool enough now to go into a tempering oven to slowly cool over the next few days. This isn't an art for the impatient.
