SUSHIRAMPAGE!!!

is this the future of sushi?
you get what you pay for is what they all say.
but sometimes, sometimes you get more than you ask for.
I've been watching people on twitter for weeks going to Soho Sushi for lunch and eating my heart out because I don't work downtown. Finally, finally Soho this week started staying open until 8pm.

Zach explaining the whole concept, fresh ingredients, the rolls made right there in front of you. Everyone's called it the Chipotle model, you decide the wrap and meat you want and as you move down the line they add the ingredients you want. But be warned, just like a burrito, if your eyes are bigger than your sushi roll, it will get big!
Stephan, working hard behind the counter doesn't get you famous on the blogs, but I guess someone has to do it.

Everything looked so good, going out there for something different I got a beef roll and hey you guys are the trained professionals, what do you think should go on this? I just went with their suggestions and, it worked out OK.

Everything got passed around, I tried about 5 different rolls and they were all good. One word of advice, a huge hunk of wasabi on the roof of your mouth feels like a punch to the forehead.

One of the complaints about downtown is the lack of affordable places to eat. Well, the Chipotle comparison doesn't stop at the way the food is prepared, it'll cost you about the same, reasonable enough to go often and the food is excellent so you'll be looking for excuses to get back.

so, is this the future of sushi?
who knows, it could be your next life changing sushi roll.

pizza infinity

Don't know if I've ever had Chicago style pizza so I can't comment on how critical everyone is of Chi-nnati's, besides the strange spelling of the name. I didn't think the pizza was any better or worse than any other Cincinnati pizza except for Dewey's, my favorite Cincinnati pizza.

I've always told everyone the best pizza in the world was pizza from the Ave, Avalon Gardens, Youngstown Ohio. The last trip through Youngstown meeting up with former neighbors I had to find out if it was still true of if I was blowing nostalgia colored smoke out my ass. Walking in, the place was kind of empty which had me worried. This could have shaped up to be a pizza cage match show down of the century.

But no, it wasn't to be, Avalon still has the greatest pizza on earth. Had a discussion with Kate the Great's dad, who's also from Ytown, even the restaurants they don't call Italian in Ytown are still Italian, you just can't find food here like you do in Northeast Ohio, its one of the things I miss from back home.

Exit Through The Gift Shop

It started simply enough, like anything else does, I had wanted to see the movie "Exit Through The Gift Shop" anyhow, and then the CAC tweeted a contest, the first ten people to reply would receive a free pass to the show. Winning a pass meant not putting it off and actually seeing a movie for once.

I didn't know what to expect and that's what I got, starting with an interview of Bansky stating he's really not that interesting and the movie is actually about Thierry Guetta, a guy addicted to recording everything with his video camera. He falls in with street artists who realize maybe the fleeting nature of their work should be documented. Theiry moves up the food chain of artists until he meets Bansky who knows that while Thierry has captured years worth of film, he has zero ability, and is maybe too insane to do anything with it. Bansky confiscates the film and sends Thierry back home.
Unknowingly Bansky has turned Thierry into a monster who copies everything he's ever seen anyone else do. At this point as events escalate and Thierry's situation became more over the top each minute I realized, is Bansky pulling one over on us?
His genre of graffiti is a glimpse into an alternate world, so why should the movie he made be any different?

If you love graffiti, there's much to like in this movie, there's even a glimspe of Cincinnati with a piece you can see looking east from the CAC, that was sweet, and a few names I recognized, a fast shot of COMA.
Worth a look and a laugh even if you know nothing of the street artists.

a year ago today

I remember the outrage I felt back on 9/11 when a major paper's headline was "America's Innocence Lost"
I was mad because, my thinking at the time was of all the things that happened over the history of the U.S. how innocent were we?
But in some quirk of prescient I couldn't quite touch, but back then could almost feel, and now today I know, we lost our innocence when Farrah Fawcett posed for that poster.
And now she's gone.
God help us all.

there is still no cure for the common birthday

except these guys, the 'Nomeratis never do anything normaly, there's always a reason to take the extra step and make the most common things special. and if anything should be special it should be birthdays.

Graduation time

Our oldest niece graduated high school and had her party this past weekend. Amazing how fast time flies, she was just a baby it seems.
