coaxing music from a kazoo isn't childs play

Everyone has hummed through a kazoo. But have you ever tried to belt out a whole song on one?
I have a new respect for musicians after this experience.

Red Roost Tavern

For awhile now OTR has been gotting all the cool bars and restaurants. But that is slowly changing, first Igby's opened, the Metropole at 21c and Sotto. Now to continue on that trend The Red Roost Tavern has opened inside the Hyatt on 5th and Elm downtown. I know, you're probably thinking the same thing I was, a bland hotel chain restaurant created just because its expected. And then I thought the Metropole at 21c, it definitely breaks the hotel restaurant mold.
If you think bars and restaurants have hit the limit for dramatics wait till you see Red Roost Tavern, in a way its a shame its hidden inside a hotel, but luckily the decor pulls you farther and farther in and by time you step inside all you have left is a dazed smile trying to take it in.

Red Roost Tavern has to be considered among the top rung of Cincinnati restaurants, both in taste, quality and presentation. You know I'm a picky eater and everything I ate nailed it, texture and taste. The smoked tomato jam in the sweetcorn soup was amazing.

Executive Chef Bernard Foster sous chef, Karol Osinksi explained the reasoning behind and the process of selecting ingredients for the menu items. The food is locally soured as much as possible. I think the local food thing might be played out, but i couldn't agrue with the quality of any single item. many of the meats and vegetables, actually all of them were bought directly from suppliers (farmers) to insure freshness.

VISION

"People say I don't have vision" stated Council Member Chris Smitherman "I have a vision and that vision is for Cincinnati to not go bankrupt"

Two thoughts jumped to mind when I heard this.

#1 What people? The old news media repeats every word Smitherman utters as gosple truth. Hey, wait one second, Cincinnati bloggers have been very vocal in their criticism of Smitherman. Interesting.
#2 that isn't a vision, the a base minimum for every Citizen of Cincinnati and downright embarrassing that a council member would say it.
What I hear is that Chris Smitherman's goal is for Cincinnati to be in good financial shape, but he has no idea how to get the city there. Smitherman's thinking instead of a solid plan maybe he can manage the city into a shallow death spiral until Cincinnati crashes and burns. This of course happens in some future time after he's grabbed all the glory.
Lets put this baseball perspective for a second. Do you feel Joey Votto's goal when he walks up to the plate is to not strike out? Hell no, every time he walks up to the plate he can already see the ball splashing into the Ohio River.

We need more Joey Vottos on city council and less Drew Stubbs.

Mercer commons

The first condos in OTR's Mercer Commons will finish up and be move in ready in about a month. They are far enough along that the first section, Mercer Historic has already held two open houses.
If you're in the market for an OTR condo don't sit on your hands for too long, as of today four units have offers on them. When finished there will be a total of 28 condos and 126 apartments.

East is West

This seems to throw people off, 50 West is on the east side. In a nondescript building that could use more noticeable signage.
But if you find your way there and work your way inside its a chill little place.
50 West is brewing enough beer at the moment to supply the restaurant/bar they run but have plans to expand their brewing capacity in the very near future. After that they'll need a bigger space.

The reason everyone was at 50 West to begin with, the 'Nomerati throwing a birthday party for her husband.

An unexpected bonus I got to meet Ginny from the Charlie Tonic Hour. Ginny and Charlie run brewery tours and 50 West was one stop. It was interesting how The Hoperatives, Tom and Carla just by being there highjacked and derailed half the people on the tour. Hey, gave me a chance to say hi to Ginny and Charlie so it works for me, maybe the Hoperatives should be a fixture on every tour?
50 West
We got our own little tour of the brewery too, short and sweet. Like I said, they have enough room to brew for their bar and that's about it.

An open letter to Cincinnati officials on the streetcar

Dear Council members,

After two hotly contested elections aimed at killing the streetcar and an election that saw an injection of younger more progressive people into city council I feel the citizens of Cincinnati have made it clear they want a streetcar built. It has come down to this, you've just approved eleven million for street rehabs that will last until this first freeze/thaw. But you struggle with investing another $17 million in a streetcar that will last 30 years and propel Cincinnati into the future.

I understand, the noisemakers are amplified by the TV, radio and print media who only portray one side on the story.

Don't be mislead by these groups, the most vocal of them aren't even based in the city!

You still have all the support for the streetcar that you did in the last two elections.
Keep in mind, no one who has opposed the streetcar has been re-elected.

Thank you

I've make it simple to email council, click the link, write your own email or copy and paste mine then hit send, its as easy as that.
Click here to email City officials.

UPDATE: The USDOT just promised another $5 million in additional assistance if the city comes up with the $17 million shortfall.

Cincinnati ArtWorks power2give Website Unveiling

The who and what;
Who: ArtWorks in partnership with The Johnson Foundation
What: ArtWorks power2give.org Launch Party, featuring the official unveiling of Cincinnati’s new nonprofit crowdfunding website for arts and cultural projects, power2give.org/Cincinnati. The party included Microsoft Tablets so attendees could learn about and support projects. Food was provided by FUSIAN Sushi and Dojo Gelato.
power2give.org is an online cultural marketplace designed to connect donors with projects they are passionate about. Specifically, the site allows cultural organizations to post and promote projects in need of funding and invites donors to contribute directly to the projects that are most intriguing to them.

Here are three examples of the many projects you can help fund,

And the most exciting aspect of helping these arts projects is that when you give your donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 thanks to a grant from The Johnson Foundation. Even small gifts will make a big difference in Cincinnati and the 2,500 students Artworks will employ this summer.

Reds vs Brewers

Brought to you by Bounty Select-A-Size!
Yes every single Reds game has sponsorship these days whether you notice or not in all media noise.
So they try to get ever more creative which is how a handful of bloggers got invited to the game. Cover the Tastiest Messes” Food Contest and then hang out in Bounty’s hospitality suite. It was interesting seeing a, not really behind the scenes of the event, but kind of being in on it and watching the PR team go, these people were the real deal, razor sharp and on message the entire day.
Then for my contribution, lucky for me Katy Morgan of Fox19 is a good sport and let everyone take a bunch of awkward pictures as she ate.

Reds vs Brewers
They ate a little bit of anything that was messy at the ballpark, I wonder how they felt later that night.

You'll only be jelly I hung out in this suite until you realize the beer choice was Miller Lite or Bud Light. I went with Miller because of course it has no GHT.

And I met Mr. Perfect Tom Browning, I couldn't believe the emotion in room as the Reds feed showed clips from various past games and then Browning's perfect game came up. It features the last pitch, him coming off the mound and getting buried under Reds players. I glanced back at Tom and he was glowing. Gawd that must have been something, having that emotion wash through you and have it reafirmed from all your teammates.
He also talked about that time he left the Cub's game and ate hotdogs on a rooftop across the street from Wrigley. He laughingly told us the next series in Florida Wayne Huizenga tried to bribe him into leaving the game and eating at his steakhouse. No way Browning said, I was in enough trouble already.
