MPMF

Its easy for people to stand back and throw stones and take potshots at OTR. Its gentrified, its expensive and exclusive. Saying and thinking those things is taking the easy way out. Expensive? sure its that. But you don't have to spend the GDP of a small African nation to eat or have fun. Lucy Blue Pizza anyone? You can get a slice for two dollars. Bakersfield? A taco, PBR in a boot and a tip will give you change back from a ten. And that isn't even settling, its some of the best food you'll eat anywhere.
And events? same story, recently people got worked up over Diner en Blanc. But how about The City Flea? Doesn't cost a dime unless you purchase something. Second Sunday on Main? Free.
Which brings us to MPMF, what I love about MPMF is that you could spend as much or as little to attend as you want. You could purchase a VIP ticket for $140 or you could go and not spend a penny hanging out at the Midway with its free stage or a couple other venues offering free music.
I hung out at the Midway, soaking up free music and checking out the interactive box trucks, they keep getting better every year. The Rockomatic and Chase Republics Short Order Poetry were popular.

My favorite carnival truck was The Bid Haus' truck, QueenCityInk where they recruited tattoo artists to apply sharpie tattoos.

ArtWorks had student artist painting cars, people volunteered to have their cars painted, look for these on Cincinnati streets. I love Arnolds Sprinter van and the car with the V&V inspiration, we have one of Kevin White's paintings so I get excited when I see his influence on artowrk in the city.

This is one of Cincinnati's greatest assets, you can have a good time no matter how much you have to spend.

A Strong Cincinnati Is Good for Everyone

That's what Roxanne Qualls says, and while her opponent for mayor is giving neighborhoods lip service Vice Mayor Qualls has been actually implementing this philosophy.
The Vice Mayor has been a champion of form based codes for Cincinnati. Rather than a one size fits all approach to zoning, form based codes allow the various neighborhoods to structure the codes to fit their needs the best.
Another of her strategies that tie directly into form based codes is livable streets. Giving the streets back to the residents and users of the community.
Think Calhoun in Clifton. In 2004 Calhoun was dominated by drive through fast food joints. Now its a dense, mixed use neighborhood with apartment, retail and office space.
Or Westwood Square, a parking lot and other property at the intersection of Harrison, Epworth and Urweiler avenues will be turned into a civic square for the community.
The Northside will also benefit with a $10 million mixed use development at a the corner of Hamilton and Knowlton Blue Rock St., a long vacant lot. And lets not forget all the changes in Walnut Hills happening with the opening of one way streets for two way traffic again.

The Vice Mayor has also been working towards a truly multimodal transportation system. No one system will fit every worker and resident in the city. Streetcars buses and BRT will all need to work efficiently together.
One last program for making great neighborhoods is getting people back into homes. This is the primary concern of the Homeless to Homes Plan, get people into temporary, transitional or permanent housing depending on their unique situations.

Building great neighbors take vision, forward thinking and a true leader. Roxanne Qualls has all these in abundance.

Oktoberfest'n

I've always felt like the Cincinnati Oktoberfest wasn't really for downtowners. And apparently there are people who agree with me. Last year Moerlein's "Uber Tent" sprang up and this year in addition to that was Rhinegeist's Franz Fest.
It helps that the Rhinegeist guys are just like us. Except that they brew awesome beer!

Got some scuttlebutt while I was there, they're expanding the brewery into another floor and will begin canning at some point. What excited me the most is the possibility of a Tazza Mia coffee stout! I'd had a few beers at that point so the coffee stout might have been wishful thinking on my part.

All that said we did end up cruising through the county fair on steroids for a quick beer.

the future of Cincinnati

The rumor mill has it a Graeter's will open at 14th and Vine and we already know a Subway is opening at Central and Sycamore paving the way for a franchise gold rush after the streetcar begins operation. What do you think will happen first, a Pottery Barn Kids next to Park+Vine? A Starbucks next to Findlay? A W Hotel at Elm and Liberty? It seems like the wild west right now in terms of what could happen.
The future is steaming towards us even as we speak.

I wonder how much money they could raise for the streetcar selling left over pavers?

The City Flea September

Yes! This was more like it, it wasn't 95°and The City Flea was reconfigured due to streetcar construction on Elm. Too bad they couldn't rotate the layout around the lawn each month, might be interesting.

the dog days are over, the dog days are done

Chris Seelbach had a fundraiser Sunday at Neon's and encouraged everyone to bring their pets. Sid isn't one for traveling but there were a few dogs there with all kinds of personality.
