wikileaks car driving diaries

A discussion weeks ago, if you hit the lottery what car would you buy. Everyone chimed in with Ferrari's, Maserati's you know, all the usual suspects. When I jumped in with Fadi, my sneaker/car/motorcycle loving compatriot we started talking driving experience. My argument is that with all the driver aids, anti-lock brakes, anti-skid, over and under steer sensors those cars all drive themselves with almost no involvement from the driver. So I chimed in I'd just stick a W8 in the back of my GTI, how cool would that be?
But what I'd really like is that Fiat Cinquecento sitting in the repair shop at 9th and Elm. Throw a Hyabusa engine in it and it would be fighting you all the way into the ditch.
How about Noel's awesome Honda Z600? with a Honda 600 in it, its gotta rip.

But that was all before I saw this mint BMW 2002, that changed everything, an original sport car brought into American before the American car companies started building them. I wouldn't even mess with the engine, I'd just drive it as is.
Now I know I don't have to be rich to acquire any of these cars, just seems like it would make it all that easier though doesn't it?

  1. Your 2002 photo should be of the earlier version, before they had to put in the 5-mile/hour bumpers.

  2. Even Ms 5chw4r7z who normally doesn't pay too much attention to cars commented on how ugly the bumpers were.

  3. My pick would be a vintage Porsche with a targa top. Oh, and also a driver...

  4. Hanging out in Oakley, huh? (I live in Oakley!)
I've been reading your blog in my feed reader for some time, now - thought I'd say hi!
    Hi!
Also, I'd pick any old car made out of actual metal and steel over any new car - but just all tricked out with new car conveniences.

    I LOVE your photos!!

  5. Those are the US spec bumpers, you need the Euro style bumpers, along with the Turbo flares...

and VisuaLingual I couldn't agree more on the Porsche, a 930 Targa isn't THAT expensive, but it's a pain to maintain..

  6. Thanks Sybil! I do venture into Oakley, I saw the 2002 at Biggs.

Maya, if you need someone to flog the Porsche I'm sure Fadi and I could help you out.

  10. Bob, I'd like one of these, please. Just a sporty little tin can, nothing too flashy.

  11. Bob, actually vintage BMWs are an affordable hot/lux car alternative, lot's of bang for the buck. These are especially attractive if you don't drive a lot of miles. BMWs are expensive to buy and maintain but they do offer a great driving experience. The trick is to buy low mileage used models in great shape that have been well maintained. It takes a lot of time to familiarize your self with the models, the maintenance schedules and their inherent quirks. Owners tend to be passionate and loyal car nuts. I used to work for Porsche and the 911s are fun but require similar maintenance but are not as lux and have quirky handling.

We like the 5 series, we think it is the best mix of driving experience performance and luxury. We don't like the looks of the BMW styling in the last few years but think the e36 and e39 models (1988 to 2003) have that classic look. The 3 series is a little small and the 7 series too big and expensive. We have two 5s a 10 year old e36 and a and a 20 year old e39. My work car which used to be our main one, it is a 1991 525 with 160K on it, I keep it patched it up and I am looking for some interior parts and a rust free door, trying to decide how much to put into it and if I should get it painted. Our main car is a hot 1991 540i with 110K on it. We hate it each time we fill the tank but we love driving it on road trips.

The mint 2002 you fell for appears to be a mid 70s model, they sell for 1K to 10k depending on condition and miles, here is one on a way cool site called bringatrailer.

  12. Vudutu, that's exactly what we were talking about, since I drive my car once every week or so I wouldn't need to rely on it to be a daily driver.
We may end up with one yet, and get sucked into the cult most likely.
