Cincinnati Park[ing] Day

A worldwide event, Park[ing] Day this year involved over 800 parks in 30 countries.
Park[ing] Day is a one day event held every year where citizens turn metered parking spots into a temporary park. A public space.
It seemed like the last couple years it was gaining traction in Cincinnati. Until this year that is, on a day that dawned cool and overcast everyone stayed home. Its a little disappointing, but after lunch it was brilliant out.
You want some IRL old school social networking as apposed to the new fangled virtual type?
Sit at a table in front of Park+Vine for a couple hours.
Next year we need to find a way to get Artswave and the Art Academy involved. Who else, there has to be other creatives out there who could really sink their teeth into this.

Bier Laufen

The World’s Fastest Parade, held Saturday at Christian Moerlein's hub for everything beer related in OTR. It was held in conjunction with the Hudy 14K run earlier in the morning. I'm outside the runners circles so I saw hardly any info on this and wouldn't have even known about it if I hadn't had a chance encounter with one of the reps organizing it.
The variety of "floats" showed just how far these guys thought the race part of this out. While some of the entry's were little more than floats, Arnold's and Neon's put their thinking caps on and built thin nimble racing machines with no sensitivity at all to the parade aspect of the race.

How did Little Kings get the governor down here to race and keep it so quiet?


In the end it was the Neon's lithe and fast bathtub that set the fastest time and took home the glory.

First look: Jimmy G's

The same guys who brought you Lunar/Launchpad, Scott Sheridan, Bill Foster, Ryan and Ron Goldschmidt and Chef Jimmy Gibson are at it again, preparing to bring their expertise to your dining experience. This was more of a pre-sneak peak than a sneak peak as they're working frantically to have the old Wah-Mee space at 5th and Elm completed for a November opening.
My first reaction was I walked into a time capsule of Wah-Mee and the process of deconstruction was going on, this place hasn't been touched since the 50's. Then our guide and partner/owner Ryan Goldschmidt told us, "think Mad Men" and I remembered last December Scott Sheridan told me he wanted the space to channel the Rat Pack and it all made sense.
I never would have guessed how big the place was, it went on forever, there are 3 rooms in the back for parties, a smaller one for a bout 14 people and two larger rooms that when combined could probably host a small reception.
If you are familiar at all with the Cincinnati food scene Chef Jimmy Gibson doesn't need an introduction, he was the Executive Chef for Jeff Ruby forever and has his hand in other projects as well. The food on hand to sample was amazing and if you've had appetizers at Launch or FB's you know whats in store.
They'd like the average price to be around $25 a person so it shouldn't price out anyone looking for a fine dining experience.

The VIP pitch, nowadays we call this crowd sourcing you need some deep pockets but if you have the ability to prepay you can get up to a 40% bump on your money. Back when we were talking about opening a coffee shop we were going to do this, selling $125 gift cards for $100 before the opening to raise cash.
Private wine lockers, don't worry, the swans aren't staying.

This is going to be a nice addition for the south west corner of downtown, on one hand you have the sandwiches at Main Stay Rock, which are fantastic by the way, or you have the run of the mill bar food at Champs, or you could hike 5 or 6 blocks for something upscale.

Fire Museum of Greater Cincinnati

The museum, ranked as one of the best in country had their annual open house with a chilli cook-off, the 911 Memorial Poker Run and free admission to the museum.The event this year included artifacts from the World Trade Center.

Amazing the elaborate system they had created, when a firebox was pulled the central firehouse could "compute" the location of the box, then notify the closest fire house. I sometimes forget that computers in one form or another have been used for year before modern digital computers were invented.

Imagine our surprise Sunday afternnon when we hit Main St and witnessed people walked around shellshocked. And how our eyes lit up when the saw Jeni's ice cream truck siting there.
At the same time all of us exclaimed "NOOOOO WAY!"
Yes way, one of the guys in the truck was giving an oral history of Jeni's Ice Creams as he served people who may or may not know anything about them.
When asked he told me they were just feeling the place out.
But I had to know for sure what was up and this is what Jeni's told me.

On the record, we love Cincy. Would love to be able to scoop down there more regularly... but we've got nothing else in the works right now—except for rolling up in the Street Treats truck again next month for Second Sunday. Giddyup.

No ice cream turf wars for the foreseeable future.
I highly recommend getting yourself to Second Sunday on Main next month for some Jeni's Ice Creams.

The anti-city group coast compares the streetcar to terrorists murdering Americans.
I'm mad, but I almost feel sorry for those Keystone Cops of politics.
They need to see a doctor asap.



Never mind the fact that the streetcar is already funded with State and federal funds. State law says it would be illegal to use these transportation funds for payroll.
I wonder how many dollars eaten up in frivolous lawsuits by these guys could have been used for police and fire payroll?

Special 911 exhibit. There has been no admision in previous years, I can't find confirmation anywhere.
With the 911 memerabilia they may charge, still plenty to see outside wth all the old trucks.

I get asked all the time, “5chw4r7z where do we go downtown for our anniversary/birthday/special event?”
Its not surprising to me when people want to do something special, their first thought is downtown. The energy and excitement are a link, bookmarking a point in time.
Got me thinking, Cincinnati could be missing a marketing opportunity.

Make everyday special, come downtown!

And if, as some think that I just plopped into downtown and declared it the greatest place in the world just because I'm here, no, because I've never felt that way about anywhere else I've lived. No its your reverence/disregard, fascination/revulsion, expectation/doubt of downtown Cincinnati that has convinced me this is the greatest place in the world to live.
