The first game i've been to in a couple weeks, and just stepping out of the condo on 4th it already felt different, we weren't the only ones on the street, even clear over at Plum. You could tell something big was going on. I wonder how the play-offs are going to feel? If last night was any indication its going to feel electric.
I can't believe after sticking up for Leake all day yesterday thats how he treated me, he looked efficient and consistant right up until he wasn't giving up 6 hits in 12 pitches.

Downtown Dash & Block Party

Or as it was officially known, The Secret & Old Spice Downtown Dash & Block Party at St. X Church, but that's a big mouthful.
But it is for a good cause, they raised and distributed $3,000 to 6 local charities the Crossroad Health Center, St. Peter Claver Latin School, the Peaslee Neighborhood Center in Over-the-Rhine, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Downtown Residents Council and the Drop Inn Center.
For August they really couldn't have asked for a better night, very low humidity, so low the weather forecast actually said some areas were experiencing wind chills.

We couldn't stay long but cruised through to support a bunch of friends running. The crowd seemed thin to me, at least compared to the OTR 5k, the dash needs to step up their game promotion wise.

It only took Rob about a block to drop all the girls he was running with.


The winner came through at 16:29. I'm not an expert but that sounds pretty quick to me.

Rob came through at 18 something I think.

Jean-François everyone's favorite waffle guy ran through at 20:21.

J.T. always the eternal character celebrates because only three girls beat him.

Talking before the race I found out Meghan Mongillo went to school with a couple of my cousins. Another Crestview Rebel.

Parker Flats Friday; one tire up in smoke

what an awesome evening it was, last night, the LCD at PBS said 87 but it felt so comfortable.
how crazy is that the high 80s feels cool now, we're gonna freeze when the weather turns.
but no worrying about that now with a cold beer and a cigar.

i've had my bike a good twenty years now and the tires literally wore out and rotten off, i forgot just how cool brand new tires are. got one mounted up, the second one i don't know what i did but the tube exploded in a spectacular fashion when i inflated it, well, that was a five dollar screwup. back to the bike shop.




and a spectacular end to a goergious day for a finale.

Fontayne-Porter daguerreotypes

Opening this months Wired Magazine and paging through I got super excited finding this story and the accompanying pictures which I instantly identified as Cincinnati. Wired calls this series of pictures, the Fontayne-Porter daguerreotypes, the most famous of that type ever taken, and in 1848, daguerreotypes where super high tech.

To match these daguerreotypes a digital camera would have to capture 140,000 megapixels. The whole panorama could be blown up to 170 x 20 and still remain crisp. Something I found fascinating was even though the image of the clock face was only 1 millimeter across the resolution was high enough to still tell the time, the picture was taken at 1:55pm and in 1945 using steamboat records to find the date when all the steamboats were in Cincinnati they determined it was September 24, 1848.

Wired magazine explains the process,

"Daguerreotypes start as copper plates with a thin, mirror-polished coating of silver that’s been exposed to halogen gas (iodine or bromine) to make silver halide. Light hitting this compound knocks an electron loose, which attaches to a silver ion, forming a neutral silver atom. The result is that all the places on the plate exposed to light are clusters of pure silver, and the rest is silver halide.

Next, the exposed plate is held over a warm pool of mercury (don’t breathe!). The mercury combines with the silver atoms, creating the equivalent of a digital image’s pixel: a tiny “grain” between 150 and 800 nanometers in diameter that scatters light, making areas of the surface that were exposed to more light appear brighter. Finally, the plate is soaked in sodium thiosulfate, which washes away the unexposed silver halide, leaving dark regions — the image’s blacks and grays.

The result is a one-of-a-kind direct positive — as opposed to the negative produced by modern chemical photography — with a haunting, soft, almost three-dimensional quality. Look at a daguerreotype from the wrong angle and you’ll see only a reflection: The image is trapped inside the mirrored surface."

Groupon

Did everyone get their Groupon for Dilly Café yesterday? I spent the day watching Chuck freakin out on twitter, did he think that many were going to sell? I couldn't tell if he was excited or apprehensive in a OMFG WTF did I do kind of way. All I know is me and 2,000 of my closets friends are having a tweetup there next week. Follow me on twitter if you want in on the action.
You don't know about Groupon? I've been a little critical of the deals lately because it seems like they've gotten thin but they send an email every day with a half off deal. In the beginning everyone of them was good but now there seems to be too many $5 for a $10 off and I ain't driving to Mason for what is essentially a free beer. But they still have some gems mixed in, like the deal for Dilly yesterday, they just don't come fast and furious like they did in the beginning.

It reminds me somewhat of the Saturday afternoon we went to the Giminetti Baking Co. Got there about an hour before closing to use our Groupon. As we sat down to eat a good sized crowd poured in behind us and I noticed most of them clutching their Groupons.
But it seems like they loved it, people in there that otherwise would have never stopped in.
The food was good, the decor? Well the food was good and thats what counts right?



I wasn't the only person taking pictures, this dude looked pretty serious.

the path to Cincinnati enlightenment through Wilmington, NC

You can get inspiration and find excitemment in many places, of course the fact we were on vacation helped. But it didn't strike me right away walking the boardwalk along the Cape Fear River on the way to dinner. Yosake, an upscale Shanghai Momma's if you will. Pad Thai, Asahi and all that.

And this is where it hit me, one day in the not too distant future, we'll walk from Parker Flats along the Ohio River to the Moerlien Ale House for example, another short stroll along the river for desert, man, this is going to be incredible and I can't wait.
Once the whole thing is done, I wonder if there will be water taxi's running people from end of the Banks to the other? River Rat bike taxi's zooming around, crowds stepping off the streetcar.
Graeter's will need another location, what could be better than walking along the river at night than walking along the river eating ice cream?
Nothing, that's what.
