that’s the way the stomach rumbles

"People may advise you to listen to your gut instincts: now research suggests that your gut may have more impact on your thoughts than you ever realized. Scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the Genome Institute of Singapore led by Sven Pettersson recently reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that normal gut flora, the bacteria that inhabit our intestines, have a significant impact on brain development and subsequent adult behavior."

All this according to Scientific American.

Foreign cells out number our cells by 100 to one making the average person only 1% human. So what if what we've always thought of as a gut instinct, a sixth sense or prescience is actually the other 99% of life in our bodies desperately trying to keep us from killing ourselves and themselves at the same time.
Brings up some unsettling thoughts of how much we are really in control.
What strings or nerves do these aliens pull?
What drugs do they pump into our blood to control emotions?
What the hell do they want with us?

Yelp

What started off as a tool to find and read reviews of local services, yelp seems to have found new life in its location aware applications, what with 4sq getting all the press lately Yelp and and Facebook are now getting in a the twitter action of checking in with a location aware app. I've had a love/hate relationship with 4sq, it left a little to be desired, like 100% up time. Or correct addresses and other information and of course the hundreds of duplicates, stupid names and other incorrect of false information with check ins.
Recently on a day off, a day off that a couple other friends just happened to have off we found ourselves at Nicholson's talking big news.

The big news of course, was one of Cincinnati's twitter communities most poorly kept secrets, our (and by our I mean every single person in Cincinnati) good friend Alex becoming Cincinnati's first community manager. Cincinnati will have Yelp's full attention with Alex at the controls. It seems every new location will need to pass the sniff test to determine if it is indeed a real place, no more check ins at the "tweetdeck at Parker Flats" with yelp. I started using Yelp with twitter for check ins and location services, but after looking around there's already a whole community there writing reviews using Yelp the way it was intended, me, I'll have to see, right now I'm content to use it for checking in.

look around

Its easy, sometimes, to assume you have to go to an exotic location to see something special. So you don't bother, you don't look for anything other than what you've seen and like a self fulfilling prophesy you never see anything special.
On vacation this past July my dad booked a thrill ride on a high speed boat, but before that could begin it required some idling through no wake zones. And what happened? Something I didn't expect, dolphins! Exciting, thrilling a sight I had never seen before. Right there, I don't think you could consider the North Carolina coast exotic yet there they were. I considered the whole trip a success right then.

What does that have to do with anything? It made me stop and think about Cincinnati, people think you need to go to some glamorous city to see special things. But Cincinnati is chock full of incredible sights and opportunities.
You just need to let go your prejudices and really look.
Don't take anything for granted.[where: 45202]best place to learn how to live downtown cincinnati ohio the ethos of Cincinnati

hello strong social ties nice to meet you

An awesome story in the NY Times about people moving away from conspicuous consumption and gravitating towards experiences. I've been saying this for awhile but its nice to be reassured by the Times that its not just my imagination. There's been actual studies done, and not surprising they've found that pair of shoes you've lusted for, that happiness fades fast.
An experience meanwhile slowly fades, and with rose colored glasses, that experience may take on more meaning and generate more happiness over a long period of time.
And the advantage of living downtown?
The ease in surrounding oneself with other experience centric people.
For example, the Cincinnati Nomerati's cheese party.

Jennifer Black, president of the retailing research company Jennifer Black & Associates and a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors in Oregon says “I think people are realizing they don’t need what they had. They’re more interested in creating memories.”
The most positive aspect of creating these experiences is strengthening social bonds, which already show ample evidence in amplifying happiness.

The real manifestation of all this is of course more and more friends moving to CBD/OTR to be even closer to these experiences. If going to Final Friday or an event on the Square is awesome, going with a bunch of friends is awesome2.

Kitty, cat-tering the fire alarm.
A group of friends turns a fire alarm from a situation to endure into a serendipitous opportunity to have a good time in an unexpected way.

Family aside all this social media has given me an embarrassment of riches, more strong friendships, casual acquaintances and weak ties than I ever could have wished for and I'm happier than probably at any other point in my life.[where: 45202]best place to learn how to live downtown cincinnati ohio the ethos of Cincinnati

what alien world is this
this new world we've stumbled on

if Jules Verne had seen this, would he have dreamed H.R. Giger dreams
maybe I'm getting too romantic imagining the mythology of atmospheric architecure.

written originaly a year ago, whilst daydreaming.....

This brutal cold has me craving and thinking today.
A SoyJoy bar isn't going to cut it, I need to wrap some heavy furs around myself and head into the deep woods with about ten friends and spear a woolly mammoth. It just seems ice age like frigid air calls for meat thats had a spear stuck in it and a blazing bonfire.
Man, when it gets this cold I can smell the fires and smell the food cooking.
Brings back the Boy Scout days and the Klondike Derbys.
Crazy, awesome beer drinking weather too.
Something about the colder it is, the richer and fatter the food is I crave.

mammoth

And that brings up something else. Why Was the optimal hunting party 9 - 12 men?
Why can you can deeply care care for your immediate family and a few others, 10 - 15 people and after that it trails off some.
Most sports teams are 9 - 12 or so people.
Interesting we take that for granted.
Or is there something to it?

who are you?

cook out

What are you all about?
No matter how much lip service people give it, not many of us like change.
OH, we'd like change, as long as its other people changing.
new hat. and suit

But deep, soul searching what am I all about change, man that's hard.
The only way I know to change is to push, to try, test boundaries, get uncomfortable.
Boy it sure is easier to just toe the line and get along isn't it?
GQ photoshoot

Even professional challenges, do you shy away or charge in? The sure fire way of learning anything new is wading in.
Those reasons you have for not trying?
Actually those are constraints to work around, that's safe, no one ever got the glory with one hand on home base now have they?
If you never push, never get uncomfortable, you'll never learn anything about yourself.
