Curb’d's Covington Parklets
Parklets, A parklet is another creative placemaking tool for activating unused or underused places. A parklet is a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street. The idea being, is car storage the best use for space, or would opening the space up for people be a better use. A group of people have amazing powers, on an empty street pedestrians will quickly walk through and disappear. But introduce some people hanging out and all the sudden everyone else slows down, they peek in store windows and generally take in the block a little more than they normally would.
Covington, in partnership with Curb’d and the Haile Foundation have rolled out five innovative parklets. I was amazed to see the power these parklets have over their environment. The Urban Basin Bicycle Club hosted a bike tour of the parklets and I thought we would stop maybe a minute at each one and move on. No, that didn't happen, everyone got pulled into their gravity field and had to be drug away, metaphorically kicking and screaming. Parklets are parking space sized transporters that take you to amazing places, grab a coffee or a beer and hang out awhile.
