Quan Hapa

Downtown's moment of glory with the opening of Igby's and the Metropole at 21c didn't last long.
OTR is making a splash again with Kaze opening last Friday and now Quan Hapa, which officially open tonight.
We checked their soft opening last night, the newest hip little gastro pub serving up up Asian Fusian.
They have a limited menu right now but don't think for a second that means lacking.
No way.
Everything was incredible.

Okonomiyaki, a Japanese pancake is not to be skipped!

They have a selection of rolls, not quiet sushi but still flavorful and delicious.

Christmas polaroids

I love this stuff, Ms.5chw4r7z has boxes (and not small ones either) of old pictures. It always feels like a treasure hunt going through them. One thing young kids will get to experience less and less in the future, that thrill of digging through yellowed old pictures.
Or maybe they won't even care and its something only I get a kick out of, but I don't think so.
she still looks exactly like this

for real? forealism!!

I'm always beating myself up because my writing sucks.
And I hate writing.
So I worry people think my writing sucks too so what business do I have doing it.
But then I remember that Paris Hilton wrote a book and no one thinks any less of her so what the hey anyhow.
And also if I didn't write this blog how would you find out about the crazy stuff that happens downtown?
The local news isn't gonna cover it because they're busy getting quotes from the anti-city hate groups who sue for the right to lie and then get tossed out of court. And wacky mayor candidates who make up the craziest numbers about the streetcar you can imagine. I mean, to hear some people, people who should know better talk, its gonna cost a bajillion dollars to build the streetcar and we should use the money to rebuild a bridge that people are already threatening to abandon if they have to pay a penny for it.
What was I talking about?
Oh yeah, crazy. See here's the thing, living out in the xburbs theres no release for crazy so it gets violent.
Downtown? Crazy jumps around in a cardboard costume, you put a dollar in a hat, no one gets hurt, everyone leaves with a smile on their face.
Its poetic when you think about it.
crazy or not I love these guys for having the nuts to go with their inspirations

Kaze

A little Japanese den of cool that just opened at 1400 Vine St in what is starting to look like a tiny Asian district in OTR. I don't see that as a bad thing at all. Kaze strikes me as one of those chill bars that lubricates tensions, rather than aggravating them, which is what you really want from a bar anyhow. I love the inside of the place, very little was done to what looks to have been a carriage house, all the old bones are on display adding character to the space. The striking feature is the two huge red shades reminiscent of Japanese lanterns that add ambiance.

The food tasted every bit as good as it looked. And it looked like fine art.

Light Up OTR

Unlike the Fountain Square tree lighting where the entire city of Cincinnati shows up to celebrate, the OTR tree lighting is a more intimate affair. That's not to say no one showed up, there were a couple hundred people in Washington Park on a unseasonably warm night. The OTR tree lighting is more of a community building event where you'll probably know half the people gathered around. I saw kids running past on Vine St as I sat in one of the bars grabbing a drink beforehand and recognized them all.
OTR sure is changing.

A good two dozen photogs with their fancy camera's grabbed a prime viewing spot well in advance.

Mercer Commons

I got a birds eye view of the construction site the other day from Derek's Trinity Flats condo. The prep work on these developments always seem to take forever, once the foundation is in place buildings seem to go up fast. They're almost to that point now. 126 apartment and 28 condo are going to transform this stretch of Vine St. Its amazing just how few empty store fronts there are between Central and 14th now and how fast the store fronts in Mercer Commons will probably go.
