I know a handful of newspaper journalist and as far as I know, while they do dodge the slings and arrows of angry people on facebook, twitter and in the comments sections, have never had to stand in as a second in a gun duel with an angry reader.
And people say things are worse now than in the old days.

Victor Noir, a young newspaper reporter for the La Marseillaise which ran a series of letters to the editor invective of Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Things came to a head and Pierre Bonaparte, himself a prince but not a politician challenged the editor of La Marseillaise to a duel. Victor and another reporter were chosen as seconds and went to the prince to fix the terms. A scuffle ensued in an argument with the prince and Victor was shot dead. The public outcry from the murder and the events that came after all lead up to the Franco-Prussian War and the overthrow of the Emperor's regime.

Of course I didn't know anything about Victor when we discovered his tomb in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, but was fascinated by the worn area of his mouth and groin while the rest of the statue has a heavy patina. The statue was cast to suggest he had just fallen from the gunshot.
Turns out the local lore has it if a woman kisses him on the mouth, rubs his groin and drops flowers in his hat it will enhance her fertility, sex life or bring her a husband. I couldn't find anything to suggest while alive that he was a playboy, but he was young, and a professional so who knows.

At one point in time a fence was erected around the grave but created such an outcry that it was torn down.
Poor guy's been having his junk touched for 140 years.

So they've been open for 6 months now in Findlay Market, we were a little slow in getting there. A cold snowy day when we needed to hit the market anyhow so it was as good a time as any to check it out. I have a love/hate thing going with the cold right now. I love downtown when its cold, but I hate going out in it. I'm going to bite the bullet though since we have about what, 4 months of this left?

I need to ask way more questions, I ordered this nut pastry. Except it wasn't nut. Oh! I thought sausage, interesting. Except it was the weirdest tasting sausage I've had. It didn't taste bad enough to stop eating so I went with it. The pastry portions were excellent, the meat just didn't compliment it.

Here is why I need to ask more questions, breakfast muffins infused with maple syrup and topped with frosting and bacon.

How awesome does that sound? On the way out I over hear a conversation about the pastry I had, it has goetta in it. Glad I didn't know that before I wouldn't have got all the way through it, but at least I can say I've eaten it now.
Now I can't wait to get back there and try something different.

build the streetcar

I don't know how it could be made any clearer than this but here it is, from the City Manager,

The operating budget contains no line item money for streetcar, and even if it were not being built the deficit would still be $58.7 million.

If the streetcar isn't built, then the money doesn't exist.

From CincyStreetcar Blog,

On November 24th City Council passed an amendment to the Zoning Code to support higher density redevelopment around the Cincinnati Streetcar route. The amendment allows for the Parking Director to approve a 50% reduction in the required number of parking spaces for residential units along the streetcar line. If, following the reduction, the building would be required to have fewer than three parking spaces, then no parking spaces need to be required.

The Cincinnati median family income is $37,543, so half the families earn less than that, even an $100 a month would make a huge difference. AAA estimates it costs $400 a month to own a car, and we paid $15,000 for a parking spot which comes out to $75 a month. Now, if a 1,000 people downtown/OTR don't need a car or a second car that's $475,000 a month dumped directly into the local economy. So your question, where is the money going to come from to operate the streetcar, what's the ROI?
Right there, $5.7 million a year injected into the downtown economy where 57% of the tax base for the entire city comes from.
That doesn't even take into account the additional development investments from building the condos, bars and restaurants along the route.

I caution politicians, do not cave into the vocal minority of people, the leaders of which don't even live in the city. They are clinging to a maniacally strict adherence to an obsolete mindset and their vision for the future of Cincinnati is not only stunning in it's lack of imagination but is equally stunning for its horrifying lack of any kind of reason.

This has me thinking too, remember the haters who said the Art Academy move to OTR would be a total failure?
And the haters who said the new Fountain Square would be a complete waste of money and a failure?

Mayberry Foodstuffs Urban Grocery

Josh's highly anticipated urban grocery opened Wednesday mere steps from the intersection of 7th and Main. And while there are still a few empty shelves, they assured me more products were on their way.

It appears that they'll lean towards bulk items and reusable containers.

wikileaks car driving diaries

A discussion weeks ago, if you hit the lottery what car would you buy. Everyone chimed in with Ferrari's, Maserati's you know, all the usual suspects. When I jumped in with Fadi, my sneaker/car/motorcycle loving compatriot we started talking driving experience. My argument is that with all the driver aids, anti-lock brakes, anti-skid, over and under steer sensors those cars all drive themselves with almost no involvement from the driver. So I chimed in I'd just stick a W8 in the back of my GTI, how cool would that be?
But what I'd really like is that Fiat Cinquecento sitting in the repair shop at 9th and Elm. Throw a Hyabusa engine in it and it would be fighting you all the way into the ditch.
How about Noel's awesome Honda Z600? with a Honda 600 in it, its gotta rip.

But that was all before I saw this mint BMW 2002, that changed everything, an original sport car brought into American before the American car companies started building them. I wouldn't even mess with the engine, I'd just drive it as is.
Now I know I don't have to be rich to acquire any of these cars, just seems like it would make it all that easier though doesn't it?
