I've been hearing soccer is the sport of the future since the nineteen hundred and eighties, and I like to joke that it always will be.
That said, I love the energy and excitement that FC Cincinnati has generated. The whole movement has been fascinating, the soccer fans seem just a little more passionate than your average sport fan. Well, maybe not football, but definitely most any other sport.
So this whole FC Cincinnati vs. NY Red Bulls, even a non-fan like me knew this was special and amazing and not to be missed so I made a point to roll down to Fountain Square's watch party. David only beats Goliath in story books so I wasn't expecting FC Cincinnati to actually win this thing but I kept thinking what if.....
It ended pretty much how I figured, you got guys making $25K a year playing against guys making almost a million a year those are long odds. FC Cincinnati had a long string of success in the Open Cup and probably went farther than anyone expected.

5th Annual Mascot Broomball on Fountain Square

The mascot broomball game is always a fan favorite on Fountain Square, this is the first year we didn't freeze watching it. The crowd reflected the warmer temps too as it was probably the biggest I remember.

Some people around us wondered who this was, I'm going to give them credit and imagine they live outside the city, otherwise that is just sad.

All of the above and more.
Its a picnic, but a Parisian picnic, quite formal.
Its a smart mob. A large group of people highly connected by social networks.
And lastly it is formal with rigid rules, this isn't a place to be a rebel. Unless you're good at exploiting rules which a couple people were.
This year it was hosted on Fountain Square. I can't deny I was disappointed, I feel like if I have to get on a bus it should be at a location I can't walk to. But then I heard the whole idea is to showcase the urban core. So if that's correct I guess that will never happen.
But still, a good time was had by all.

Did I mention the dress code was rigid but with giant holes to exploit? No one does it better than Pinky Shears


The weather couldn't have been more perfect for the evening and the sky put on a good show.

Cinciditarod

From Fountain Square website;
"Cinciditarod is a wacky shopping cart competition that begins and ends on Fountain Square. Coined after the real Alaskan Iditarod, which involves grueling 1,100 mile dog sled race, the Cincinnati version is a little less intensive and a lot more creative. While physically attached to decorated shopping carts, teams must make their way through an approximately five mile course that spans downtown Cincinnati."
It seems like some teams had sponsorship this year, I don't remember that before. The Cinciditarod is going big time pro.
