Villiger Braniff No 3

While no one in the SCS smokes the cigar Hannibal smoked on the A-Team, we still enjoy it when a plan comes together. Thanks to Cincinnati profile we enjoyed some quality smokes and drinks on the Righteous Room courtyard off Walnut downtown.

We also got a very sneak peek at Obscura, a new bar that will be opening soon at the corner of 7th and Walnut. They claim they'll open in October but I think that maybe a bit optimistic.
Here's what they had to say, it'll be a 35+ crowd. Conversational level music. Food from JR Table.
Obscura wants to bring craft cocktails back to Cincy (don't tell one Ms. Molly Wellmann that)
They're looking to capture the pre Aronoff crowd and anyone else looking for a quit drink before or after anything else happening downtown.
They put forth some bold propositions so I hope it all works out just like they plan because I think I'm really going to like this place!

Cars and Cigars - GANGNAM STYLE

OK, really it was one car. One crazy *ssed car. The mighty Lexus LFA, the jury is out on the looks but the glove soft leather on the dash and seats is soft as a baby's butt. It felt like a cozy place to be.

Switching to Strauss Tobacconist was a very good move, huge select of quality cigars vs the couple crappy cigars the other vendor couldn't move in their store.

I'm too busy being my own worst enemy to be anybody else's

"If I cannot smoke in heaven, then I shall not go."
-- Mark Twain

Let's think about that for a second, on the surface it seems like a flippant remark. The end of the 19th century was a dark dirty place, but maybe even back then Twain saw the writing on the wall. The Temperance movement was gaining its stride and Twain certainly didn't want any part of a society with demands on personal freedoms.

I remember a hundred discussions with Jackie, I'm not sure if this is a direct quote of her's, it might be a distillation of those conversations but I remember her saying something along the lines of 'watch out for people who have your best intentions in mind"
Maybe this is what really worried Mr. Twain.

A very timely example of this is the NYC proposed ban of "sugary drinks". Here is what makes this worry some, what is the definition of a sugary drink? Ah, I see, a bunch of lobbyists will hammer that out. And OK, its not a total ban, only on "sugary drinks" larger than 16oz.
"Do you really need 450 grams, 560 grams, 900 grams of sugary soda?" says an unnamed nutritionist. What the hell does that have to do with anything and who are they to tell you how much is too much?

I know, I know, smoking is a dirty filthy habit, but be careful what you wish for.
If you're not killing yourself, you're not really living.
Or as Dan Savage famously says, ""Control should be placed on all" isn't the solution to "I have no self control.""

The Party Source Cigar tasting held every Tuesday departed the Beer Sellar for Jefferson Hall in a thick cloud of hazy blue smoke and I was prepared to hate the new location. Usually when you go into something already hating, its hard to be disappointed but surprisingly it was a good move after all, we definitely had more room, weren't cramped or fighting for tables. And my worst fear, that of not having a scenic river view was unfounded, sure we weren't right on the river but the view is every bit as good. the only downside was losing the awesome beer selection the Beer Sellar provided, small consolation that Jefferson Hall offers Bell's and Great Lakes along with all the usual lite and light mega beers.
A relaxed atmosphere, cigar and friends doesn't get much better than.
There were guys there buying 4, 5, 6 or more boxes at a time, you'd think they'd never seen a cigar before.

Cincinnati Profile Fashion and Cigars

A DJ, wine, cocktails and fashion at Blaine’s Fine Men’s Apparel in Montgomery is usually enough to draw almost anyone out, but throw in cigars and the Secret Cigar Society is gonna be there too to check out what Cincinnati Profile is talking about.

Cincinnati profile fashion and cigars

Women don't have the market cornered on shoes anymore, once upon a time a guys biggest decision was to go with brown or black, now a days men's shoe stores are beginning to look like Allen Edmonds dropped acid. Throw in red or white soles and its getting very interesting, if it makes the country club set choke on their foie gras then you might see me wearing it.

Beer Sellar

"It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues"
-Abe Lincoln

That's about right, I've always said I can't really trust anyone who is without at least one vice. They always tend to have too much time on their hands and get into everyone else's bizzness.
Besides, how do you even hang out with someone like that, what stories could they possibly have?

"A wisely chosen cigar to me, is like a weapon against certain of life's torments, in some mysterious way, a little blue smoke chases them away."
-Zino Davidoff

All that and a display of nature like this is a perfect end to a day.

Party Source Cigar taste

Whats the meaning of life anyhow? Spam the environment with as many copies of ones self as possible and eliminate competition. Some life thrived some didn't for a billion years or so until now there's almost 7 billion humans on earth. Somewhere along the way, 2 or 5 thousand years ago societies took over the heavy lifting of replicating themselves relieving individuals of the need. Instead of scrambling around burning all its energy on replication, individuals were now free to chase nobler pursuits.
Party Source Cigar taste

Thinking and talking were chief among these pursuits until recently when wasting time and telling fish stories were included. And smoking cigars. And drinking beer. On the river, sure life could be better, but not much more than that.
