HIVE13
The Maker Space at the main Cincinnati Library has opened with much fanfare and excitement. I've even used it a couple times for a project that came together much easier than I thought it would.
But the tools the library has will only take you so far. What if you get a taste of the hacker bug and really want to get crazy? The next step is HIVE13. HIVE13 is even more do it yourself than the library with people not just using 3D printers or laser cutters but they are building the printers and cutters!
HIVE13 offers a place where makers can collaborate and create projects. They promote science, technology, open source values and skill sharing. They also have a monthly technology talk. January's was circuit board design and February's is blade design. So you can see they cover a lot of ground.
When you're ready to step up to the next level look these guys up.
Dues are $50 a month with a discount for students. When you consider HIVE13 has a whole fab shop this is a pretty good deal.

will the Cincinnati streetcar actually spur development?
This is what everyone connected to the streetcar have been saying is going to happen, and it's happening. Derek Bauman, the Southwest Ohio director for All Aboard Ohio keeps repeating the mantra, density + connectivity = vibrancy. The announcements of developers plans along the streetcar seem to be coming weekly now if not daily. So far they've been rehabs of existing building. There were twenty new businesses that opened along the streetcar line last year.
But now a new narrative is forming. First a group of six led by Steve Tino of Jaymar Cole Investments and REM Group are planning a major development on empty land at Elm and Liberty. Then comes news that Rick Greiwe, builder of luxury condos announced that for the next ten years his company, Greiwe Development, is going to focus on condo construction downtown. Mr. Greiwe says his success has come from building in walkable communities.
"You have the best of arts, entertainment, sports, parks, Findlay Market and the two best dining districts in the whole region with Fountain Square and the Gateway District," he said. "All of those assets will now be connected by streetcar."
The best quote was when he said he was asked who is going to ride the streetcar. "Hah!" Greiwe said. "Who's going to ride those red bikes?"
The last piece of the puzzle is the announcement from Bob Little, principal of Urban Equity Partners LLC that he wants to develop a grocery along the Central Parkway bike lane, just a block from the streetcar. You can't overestimate the impact this could have in the core.
I'm reminded of my recent trip out west to Portland and touring the Pearl District. In 2001 the Pearl was a rail yard. Today it is stuffed full of highrise condo and office towers. Its hard to even imagine that everything there is less than fifteen years old.
OTR and downtown are obviously full of buildings already and only need infill and will surely develop faster.
Here are a few pictures from the Pearl District showing exactly what connectivity will do. Hard to imagine this was all a rail yard fifteen years ago.
This little park is pretty cool, its not connected to the ocean but the level of the water ebbs and flows like a tidal pool.

Garage Brewed Motorcycle Show
OK, so I'm still a gearhead at heart and this custom bike show was pretty cool! An invitational show featuring some of the best local bike builders in the area. The talent on display was amazing. Rhinegeist was slammed wall to wall with people and cars were backed up a couple blocks looking for parking, luckily it was a warm February day and I rode my bike right up to the door and locked it up. If anything proved how valuable the streetcar is going to be its events like this. A ton of out-of-towners could have jumped on downtown and rode it right up to the door. And talking about out-of-towners, I got a kick out of overhearing one conversation after another about how awesome OTR is and how they never expected the neighborhood to be as cool as it is. Inside, the amount of people walking around with a camera would put the City Flea to shame too. I saw one guy with an old school camera I didn't recognize and made the mistake of asking what he was shooting with. He got all snobby and gave me his life story that ended with the fact he never edits his pictures. I just grinned and thought what ever dude, if you're too lazy to edit your damn pictures you ain't impressing me. And I never did find out what the camera was, it was too cool for him that's for sure.

Size Matters
Haile Fellow, Bradley Cooper created this unique installation focused on tiny living. The exhibition explored a different themes associated with tiny living and tried to give people a sense of how big a 200 sq ft home will be.
While the installation was interesting and interactive it was the space that encapsulated it that stole the show for me. I had never been in the Assumption gallery on Gilbert Ave before and was blown away by the details that still existed in the former church.
