Higher Level Art at the Know Theatre

If there is a cool mural going up or an installation at an event around town you can be sure Higher Level Art has their hands in it. I don't think these guys ever sleep. And every year at the Fringe Festival they paint a wall over the course of the festival.
Interesting people not in the know lamenting the old mural being painted over. Remember people streetart like life is fleeting. Don't take it for granted.

Second Sunday on Main

Second Sunday on Main that eclectic little street festival in OTR that started all the others isn't so little anymore. Despite some rain drops here and there and cool cloudy skies SSOM had more people than I can ever remember seeing. And vendors, they stretched in an unbroken line from 13th all the way to Liberty on Main St. If you've never been I suggest you go check it out before it becomes a Yogi Berra line, no one goes there anymore, its too crowded.
You don't even need to check a schedule, its the second Sunday of the month, June through October.

I should have know better

Giacomo always pokes me for selling my soul and I'm ashamed to admit I really did it this time.
But Mom always said if you can't say anything nice don't say anything.
The best part of the whole night was leaving and seeing this.

Ah f#@k it, I can't help myself.
We're all living the Urban life we're walking we're biking and living it up. It all falls apart though at one point. All the sudden one night a craving for a Fields-Ertle experience sets in. it won't be denied and all the ZipCars are claimed for the night.
Fear not, that authentic strip mall experience can be found right downtown at the casino.

Chain restaurants powered by lowest-common-denominator thinking and mediocrity.
You would think if they're going to invite influencers they'd try a little harder.
I'm cutting this rant off here, it went on a couple more paragraphs but you get the idea.

The Cincinnati Rollergirls

The last home game of the season and, while no one is admitting this out loud, it could be the last Rollergirl game ever at Cincinnati Gardens. The Rollergirls have played at the Gardens since 2007 but the building and property have been for sale a while now. There has been wild speculation in the media over what could happen after a sale.
The building could remain.
It could be razed for new development.
The later would be a shame for the 65 year old building, you can feel history as you walk up to and enter the place.
The Rollergirls graciously allowed me to attend a practice to get some pictures and I got to chat with Bombtrack who is an assistant coach with the team. While hoping the Rollergirls remain right where they are, there are preparations going for worst case scenarios. They have options so the girls won't be stuck without a track next year one way or the other.
One of the features that make the Gardens special Bombtrack told me is the concrete floor. The concrete is smooth but clean which allows the girls to use harder wheels to skate fast. The concrete provides good traction without being grippy. Being a motorsports geek I instantly understood what she was talking about, running harder rubber has less friction, hence more speed.
But for the fans, I always felt the Gardens complimented the blue collar sport of roller derby.

This Saturday at 7pm is the Rollergirl's last home game of the season, the Crosstown Knockdown vs Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls.

Like I said Monday, some Final Fridays are amazing and some are completely off the hook. One of the highlights for me was Elliot James' graffiti inspired art at the Frameshop.
The art couldn't be contained by mere frames however as it flowed across the windows, across clothes and ran out onto to the sidewalk.

Final Friday:May

I got a tweet aroound 8pm or so, "Is OTR as crazy as it sounds right now?"
Yeah, its off the hook.
Friday night was pretty amazing, and not just because of a bunch of friends having shows, the entire neighborhood was vibrating. Park+Vine's 7th Anniversary Party. Nightshade Ink's tattoo themed art at Rock Paper Scissors and helmet art at Article were just a few of the things going on, toss in a Punk band at the Segway store and it was amazing night. Too much for one post, I might be blogging about Final Friday the rest of the week.
