Louvino

We were talking, or maybe it was just me talking, that once upon a time every new restaurant that opened in OTR was amazing. Because it had to be. People wouldn't risk going to OTR and get shot for average food. We have all been the recipients of an embarrassment of riches in the food scene. Now that big crowds have consistently shown up average food shops that would have never made it before are appearing.
Which brings us to Louvino, I was really looking forward to this place and the expectations were running high.
And... I wasn't disappointed. What I liked most about our visit is the way the food was handled. It didn't sit under a heat lamp for 40 minutes while our whole order was cooked. We would be talking and drinking and a plate of food would appear which we would reach for, take a portion and pass around the table. One of the coolest nights I remember in a long time. And the food was amazing, there really isn't anything more I can say, you won't be let down. I was focused on the food but Louvino's main focus is wine, they have over 60 varieties available with two certified sommeliers on staff. They will be able to handle any wine-related question you could have.
One caveat from my experience though, Louvino probably isn't a place you want to go if you are on a tight schedule. This is a place you want to relax and enjoy the food, wine, and company.

RUYA: A Turkish Coffee Experience

Coffee. Coffee is the one drink that really transcends cultures and brings people together.
Everyone has their rituals and routines for coffee, whether hitting the same place for one to go or brewing their own. I got to the point where I had to buy my own brewer at the office because I was that finicky about how mine is brewed.
But I think for a lot of people, besides needing coffee to wake up in the morning, they need it socially. In my office people don't gather around a water cooler, its the coffee pot that is the hub. Whether they drink it of not it always ends up drawing everyone there.

"Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death, and sweet as love." -Turkish proverb

I was just going to mention Ruya in my SSOM post but then I realized this really deserved its own post and I'm really glad I didn't walk past their display Sunday. In addition to coffee they've also created Rüya Turkish Coffee Chocolate Bars in collaboration with maverick Chocolate.
Melissa Aydogan, a first generation Turkish-American born and raised in Cincinnati is working with People's Liberty to open a Turkish pop-up coffeehouse in the People's Liberty Globefront. Globefront is directly across the street from Findlay Market on Elm St. Years ago I had Turkish coffee in a tiny shop in Atlanta, I really don't remember too much about it now as I was rushed and didn't have time to dwell on it. But I'm looking forward to this and having time to savor and enjoy the experience.
The Grand Opening for this Turkish experience will be September 7th 6–9 PM at 1805 Elm Street and will be open Friday - Sunday 8 A.M. – 4 P.M.until November 18th.

If you suffer from crippling FOMO....

You really should have been at Second Sunday on Main because it was happening. A mini parade, New Orleans style jazz bands and plenty of food, beer and retail vendors to go around.
If you missed it you still have two more chances, September 9th and Oct 14th.

The best way to get to and from anything happening in OTR is by bike. Or streetcar or almost anything that doesn't involve a car. Unless you like cruising around in traffic looking for parking, then OK, drive.

DANGERWHEEL!!!

Dangerwheel sure took a giant step up this year. The last time I spectated the crowd was maybe one person deep in places when we showed up this year I was astonished at the crowd. The transformation of Dangerwheel pretty much mirrors the transformation that Pendleton has undergone this year.
We grabbed a couple adult beverages and began to make our way up the hill when we saw a tiny gap to see the course and I stopped to look because by the reaction of the crowd I could tell a couple competitors were getting close. As I waited for the racers to approach a little boy, maybe five, six, seven rushed past me, jumped on a hay bail and threw a water balloon with all his might and just like that a dangerwheel appeared and the rider's helmet intersected the water balloons trajectory with a dramatic splat. Everyone including me laughed and clapped with surprise.
And that pretty much sums up the afternoon, riders flying past while people with water balloons, purchased with proceeds going to charity, flung balloon after balloon at them.
I hope they add bleachers and grandstands next year. But either way, we'll be back.
