Final Friday January

The first real Final Friday since last October, considering the holidays stepped on the last two with all the demands for time. This past Friday everyone was getting back into the swing of things, crowds everywhere on what was if not a warm night, not a bitter cold one either.
Do you want a wicked date night on the cheap? Mark your calendar for Feb 25th and get down to OTR.
The Forgotten Cincinnati Exhibition, too big to be contained by one location, it spread out over OTR in two locations.

Gordon Bombay and his child-like fascination with old amusement parks. We geeked out for awhile talking about Idora, Idlewild and other obscure small town parks.

Sherman grabbing a moment of rest amidst all the chaos of Joseph William's Home 3rd anniversary and the Forgotten Exhibit.

The Creative Gallery, the owners are moving to NY, everything must go, they have fire sale prices so don't wait.
I'm really going to miss this place when its gone, it pains me to say this but their art will find more appreciation in New York I'm sure, the midwest still resists art this challenging. I'm going back and snagging a few pieces.

  1. Idora? I'm guessing you mean the old Idora Park in Oakland. If so, I have a couple of friends who live on the former grounds. It's now a small, quaint neighborhood of "storybook" houses -- bungalows tricked out with architectural details that seem to come out of fairy tales. It's a very cute place.

  2. Idora Park in Youngstown, the neighborhood around it has small "hobbit" houses, don't know how else to describe them, lots of stone and wood shingles.
Last time I went by about the only thing left was the old Jack Rabbit with trees growing up through it.

  3. This is the one I meant. The houses you mention sound like storybook houses. Both parks and residential developments probably date back to the same era.

  4. Yep, that first picture is what all the houses around it look like, and theres a deep valley running past the park so picture those houses built into the sides of the steep hillsides.

  5. Childlike fascination is right. Out of all the places I've been too, the abandoned amusement parks are by far the coolest and most eerie.

I've been combing the internet this morning trying to figure out if there's anything left of Idora. Wiki says that no buildings remain, but even if the coaster is still there, it would be worth seeing.

Thanks for coming and checking things out Friday night. It was a blast.
