WEEELCOME...to OTR

Tarbell mural works

They got bombed once, the taggers got it out of their system then left it alone.
I had wanted to get a timeline, but they took forever in prep work, then finished the whole thing up while I was on vacation.
A couple people commented Tarbell looks creepy, but I have no problems with it.

  1. Maybe people think Jim looks "creepy" because he's not what you might call "conventionally handsome." I think it's a great rendering of him, though.

  2. The creepy part is the way you photographed it...the traffic sign looks like Jim's crank.

  3. Perfect feature for this location and the perfect figure to welcome you to the neighborhood. Jim Tarbell has fought (literally at times) for OTR and deserves this tribute.

  4. Just for comparison, here is a photo of Jim being Jim during last year's Reds Opening Day Parade.

  5. I like the spirit of welcoming people, but I don't like Jim being THAT BIG. I'm not sure I like any one person that big on the main wall facing Central Parkway. To me it makes the building seem like a toy building. Also would have preferred that they used a personality that has "passed on". Living people just shouldn't be memorialized in such a large way.

  6. I don't see why it's a big deal that he is still alive. It's unique and kind of weird looking, but that's why I like it. I want to park in front of it so that it looks like he's stepping on my car.

  7. I think this is most appropriate. We should spend more time giving credit to those while they are with us rather than when they are lost. Imagine the surprise of someone new in town seeing Jim on the street and thinking, "Hey, your the guy painted on the building downtown!" Maybe it will produce a epiphany for some about the importance of Over the Rhine and the people that cherish it.

  8. I agree people should be honored while they are here so they can know how everybody feels about them.

Post-humuous recognition is a bad idea. Ok for the family maybe, not so good for the dead. But hey, they-the dead- aren't complaining I guess. . .

I love these photos and the painting of Tarbell.
