Prime Time at Frisch's

Frisch's must have got wind of my rep as a burger lover as they asked me to stop by and try their new Primetime Burgers. The Primetime Burger was created in response to the growing desire for a quality burger at places like Flipdaddy's and other mid-tier burger joints. I had a nice lunch trying the Primetime Burger and a few deserts while talking to Greg Grisanti, Frisch's Executive Chef and Karen Maier, Frisch's VP of Marketing about Frisch's, burgers and restaurant trends.
Along the way I discovered some interesting Frisch's and Cincinnati history which I always find fascinating not having grown up here.

Frische's
Their first restaurant, the Mainliner opened in 1939 on Wooster Pike was named after the Ford trimotor airplanes flying over and landing at Lunken, hence the airplane on the sign out in front of the store. The Mainliner was the first drive in to be open year round.
In 1948, the first Frisch's Big Boy restaurant, "Big Boy One," opened on Central Parkway
The first Big Boy double-decker was made with the intention of shortening the cooking time, 2 1/4lb take less time than a 1/2lb burger to cook. something I never stopped to think about. It was made possible after Bob Wian the owner of the Big Boy restaurants in California discovered a bakery that was able to cut a three piece bun. Some time later for various business reasons Frisch's and Big Boy joined together to form a franchise.
Frische's
All Frisch's ingredients are fresh never frozen. all labor and/or equipment intensive food products are prepped at Frisch's central distribution location, then packaged and shipped everyday to the individual Frisch's locations and used to create the final product.
All the beef for the burgers are ground at the distribution center and shipped in bulk where they are formed into patties onsite. Filling for pies are also made there and shipped.
Just a note, they aren't served sliced, we were sharing all these so we ordered them cut.
Frische's
Frische's
Something about an onion ring that has been made fresh, the onion snaps instead of the soggy texture you get with a frozen onion.
Frische's
I don't usually order desert when I eat out, Greg twisted my arm into trying two deserts, the peanut butter pie and the coconut cream. All I can say is wow, they're rich, so save room you won't regret it.
Frische's

So with all that said I think Frisch's did exactly what they set out to do, create a competitive burger at a reasonable price. Try a Primetime Burger next time you stop at Frische's.

  1. I LOVE Frisch's. Especially their breakfast bar, but also their hamburgers, which are truly amazing. I don't think enough people know what sets them apart from Wendy's/McDonald's (freshness goes a LONG way. I had no idea their burgers were actually formed on site).

And their advertising is awesome. Did you see that thing with Busken Bakery about the pumpkin pies? Hysterical.

  2. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I had missed hearing how the invention of slicing a bun into three slices helped things along :)

I also did not know they had PB pie. Knew about pumpkin and strawberry.

  3. Hrm, the advertiser in my wants to say "HA! way to keep it politically neutral while still selling out for the free lunch", th estrategist on me ant to get all the Cincy bloggers togther to develop a rating system, as it is simply not fair to compare this burger to say a Terry's, but my judgemenatal side wants me to do exactly that.

  4. Giacomo, I've talked with friends about this. Instead of a 1 - 10 ranking we're thinking an A, B, C type ranking. Terry's, Moerlien, Senate, Cafe de Wheels would be solid As. McyDs would be a tough one for me because I love their burgers and I rank everyone above or below them so they might be a C+ on my scale. Everyone else would be in there. Zips and Arthers I never got and would be Ds.
We could hash the rest out over beers and cigars.
Here is a burger ranking I did from 2011

  5. Is the original Central Parkway location the current location? I know it's not the same building.
I will have to try the new burger but I will NEVER forgive Frisch's for taking liver and onions off the menu.
Did you realize Steve Ditko (Spiderman, Dr Strange, The Creeper) illustrated a few issues of the Big Boy comic?

  6. I like me some Frisch's, but it seems that every time I go there I'm the youngest person in the building - not including the workers.
