Thursday Night Slow and Steady Ride
We have been wanting to ride the Thursday Night Slow and Steady Ride out of the Northside since early April believe it or not. But as you know this year has been challenging, it has either rained or been unbearably hot every single Thursday. Finally, FINALLY we had a perfect night for a bike ride last night. I was tired but after 4 months there was no way I wasn't going on this ride.
This is what Michael Providenti one of the ride organizers, told me back in April; "The ride a started a few years ago. The pace of the ride depends on who shows up and it's not a race -- it's more a social ride. And this group has been really welcoming to newcomers. No one gets left behind on the rides and we try to be courteous to motorists.
The ride always start at Hoffner Park in Northside at 7:30. As long as the roads are dry we will probably ride. There isn't a fixed route but, generally, we go to Covington, Newport, and back through OTR. Depending on the weather and the group, the rides may only go to OTR and back. The expectation on Thursday is that it won't be a difficult or hilly ride."
And he was spot on, everyone was friendly and welcoming, the ride was as flat a ride as you could get in Cincinnati. The pace was slow, maybe almost too slow but it never felt overwhelming. We rode from Hoffner Park to Cincinnatus in Sawyer Point. There were maps handed out in case you needed one but the group never got seperated, even at traffic lights the pace was slow enough we easily caught back up to the group ahead.
Fantastic ride, if you're looking for a way to ease into riding around the city, this is your ticket.

Awesome!!! Thanx for the plug :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this awesome write-up. There has been a surprisingly sparse amount of information on this thursday ride. I wanted to go last night but fell asleep (doh!). Maybe next week. I recognize several of those bikes (and riders!) from the may bike+brew.
ReplyDeleteWhat path did you take to get downtown?
ReplyDeleteDid you guys ride back up to Hoffner park or stay downtown? I saw the write up on queen city bike the other day and thought it sounded fun, but I don't want to bite off more then my legs can chew.
Springgrove to Dayton to Mehring Way. Very Flat very slow, there were kids riding smaller bikes. If you can ride 6 miles you'll be fine. Since we rode to the Northside, we just stayed downtown when we got here.
