Japps Since 1879

No, I'm sure they didn't invent drinking in OTR, but it sure seems like it sometimes. And not the binge type drinking, I'm talking drinking and enjoying the best micro brews, wines and cocktails the city has to offer.
And the word is getting out, the bars in OTR are seemingly more crowded every weekend so it was only a matter of time before the next unique bar opened.
Tonight is the grand opening of Japps Since 1879, I wouldn't wait too long to get there, this is going to be huge.
Craft cocktails, wine and a good beer selection plus a cool space utilizing all the found object in the basement covering 130 years of Japp's history. Old light fixtures, cabinets and all the other odds and ends that found their way to the basement.
The raison d'être, a home for vagabond Molly Wellmann.

Molly explaining the Stammtisch table. Not VIP. Its the regulars table. Back in the day when you were new to town, you'd lean on the rail just like that and get the scoop to find jobs and places to live. I like the idea, you still see things like this now a days kind of. The same old guys at the same table in breakfast spots mostly.

These are not the syrupy sweet drinks that you need to be over 21 to buy but under 22 to enjoy, no. All homemade ingredients, created back in the "lab" one of the most fragrant places ever. The drinks are subtle, complex and refreshing, not a punch to the forehead sweet.
I had just got done talking to Molly about Ginger Beer and Dark & Stormys in which she admitted she's afraid of fermenting therefor no homemade ginger beer, when interestingly enough, I started getting tweets asking about it. So there you go Molly, ginger beer could be huge.

  1. Wow, I love seeing the bits and pieces of Japp's incorporated into the space.

A couple of friends of mine recently brewed up some ginger beer. I'm not much of a beer person, so I enjoyed the fact that it tasted like ginger soda, with the ginger hiding the usual beer flavor. I think it could be a hit with people like me, and possibly with beer lovers, too.

  2. The "beer" part of ginger beer is confusing. Ginger beer is a fermented drink and 99% of the commercial variety suck. Homemade or micro-brewed, now we're talking, light refreshing and sometimes burn the lips tangy.
The Dark&Stormy is the national drink of the Bahama's so you know its refreshing and perfect for the summer.

  3. And ginger beer is really a mess to make. I do an intensely-flavored ginger syrup that gives you the burn-the-lips aspect without the bubbling-in-the-basement mess. The difference with ginger beer is that the fermentation makes it effervescent instead of syrup + soda water. Little alcohol is imparted.

  4. Looks like a fabulous interior space. I hope the exterior doesn't still look like that though. If so, let's hope it gets freshened up sometime soon.

  5. Yep that's exactly what the exterior looks like. I kind of like that they haven't done too much with it.

  6. The exterior hasn't been completely cleaned up and sanitized, which is actually refreshing. A lot of the other historic facades have been cleaned up so much that they look like mere reproductions.
