I couldn't make it to the ribbon cutting but Ms. 5chw4r7z did, she took a few pictures and shared her thoughts.

Under a cloudless sky and soaring temperatures, hundreds turned out for the ribbon cutting and re-opening of Washington Park. Mayor Mallory received the most sought-after item of the day: the gift of a red, lacquered fan from the residents of Gifu, Japan, one of Cincinnati’s sister cities.

The festivities started off with a performance by a Japanese children’s choir in town for the World Choir Games. They gave an entertaining performance under the direction of their animated leader.

The crowd heartily agreed with City Manager Milton Dohoney, who declared Friday “A great day in the city of Cincinnati”. City leaders stressed inclusiveness and the desire for all citizens to feel welcome in Washington Park. Numerous activities are planned weekly including music performances, movies, children’s activities and dog programs.

Mayor Mallory had his gigantic pair of scissors and once the ribbon was cut, the fountains came to life and throngs of children had a fantastic time playing and cooling off in them.

Hung near the gazebo are dozens of flags painted by area residents. Chad Munitz from 3CDC said it best when he stated, “It takes a whole community to do this”.

Cincinnati, explore your Washington Park.

After all the heat over the weekend I finally made it for some evening shots.

  1. Had optimism for Wash park facelift (with some lingering doubts).

First impression? BLOWN AWAY! Great job 3CDC, OTR, CoC, CParksDept.

Tons of kids playing in fountains and on playground. No less than 15 dogs at 7pm last night at the dog park (one of the nicer city dog parks I've ever seen). No beer cans or trash (or worse) floating around.

Should be a great anchor for the neighborhood as she continues to develop.
