MORTAR Mess Hall at Rosedale

Warm weather is upon us and the outdoor kitchen at Rosedale will no longer sit empty. The MORTAR Mess Hall has opened to provide street style food Wednesday through Sundays. Two graduates of the MORTAR Cincinnati Entrepreneurship Academy - Paityn's Place Soul Food and MaHope Cambodian Cuisine - will be featured. They will be serving entrees as Cambodian tacos with green papaya slaw and tangy sauce; and savory chicken, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of other delightful side dishes.
There will be a soft opening Saturday, March 31st and they officially open on April 4th. Paityn's Place Soul Food will serve food Wednesday and Thursday, MaHope Cambodian Cuisine will be operating Friday through Sunday.

March for Life aka The Kids are Alright

This time it really does feel different, people aren't letting the shootings go like they used to. Part of it is due to a few social media heroes who have stepped up, heroes like Emma González a well-spoken and articulate young adult who is a breath of fresh air.
And just like mothers have made an impact on drunk driving laws, moms are now joining the cause to prevent their children from being shot at school with Moms Demand Action.
Corporations are beginning to step up also, requiring background checks and 21 to purchase.
Change is coming.

St. James of the Valley

St. James of the Valley was an interesting fish fry. The fish was crispy and tasty, that fish might be some of the best I've had at a church fish fry. St. James would have got 4.5 fish out of 5 except for one thing. No French Fries, I really love my French Fries. By all rights they should probably still get that score, all the sides were top notch. One curious decision they made though, where all the other churches charge $1 for desserts, St. James gave them with dinner. Good for us but they were leaving money on the table.
If you can only make one fish fry and French Fries don't matter to you, St. James should probably be the one you attend.

Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey

I didn't know much about Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey except they were going to be biscuit centric. Biscuits seem to be one of those things that are done mediocre or almost right. But never perfect. The last place that knew how to make them was the long gone Northside Take the Cake. Now we have Boomtown, and with biscuit in their name, they had better crush it, and they did.
Boomtown has a whole menu of comfort food designed around that dollop of leaven bread. Keeping with the boomtown gold rush theme all dishes are served on cast iron or prospector pans. The food is deceptive when they first bring it out, it doesn't look like a whole lot. But what they serve is filling, about a third of the way through my biscuits and ham I started to worry if I was going to be able to finish it all. But I did, I wasn't leaving a scrap behind.
While we're on the subject of boomtown's, Pendleton is going through a boom of its own. Three restaurants, a coffee shop and soon an ice cream parlor all in the span of a block. Plus tons of new apartments and condos.

The Takeaway

This is going to be the summer of Main St in OTR. It seems like practically every empty storefront from Central to Liberty is undergoing rehab. leading the charge is The Takeaway, a deli/convenience store specializing in a quick meal. It doesn't look anything like Indianapolis' Goose the Market but I couldn't help feeling that's where I was. Dustin Miller said, actually that was our inspiration, except we don't have 27 feet of cured meats.
So drop in, have a sandwich freshly made, grab a side and a soft or an adult beverage and you're on your way.
And The Takeaway is steps from Zeigler Pool, where I can see many fresh delicious sandwiches in my future this summer.

Friday Fish Fry

I was on my own on a Friday night so I jumped on the bike, shot across the Roebling and hit The Gruff. Even though it's a short ride away I've somehow never been there, and now I'm a little salty I waited so long. The fish sandwich was perfect, that magical combination of crispy and tender flaky at the same time. The fries, well the fries were about as perfect as they could be too, everything I love about fries. Good food, a chill space and not much more you could ask for.
Except maybe an art show, but more of that in a minute.

With a full content belly, I landed in Camp Washington and People’s Liberty's newest community endeavor, Globefront. Globefront is the logical extension of Findley Market's Globe Gallery. Artists winning a Globe Grant will open a space to do what they do best in engaging the community. The first 2018 Globe Grant Recipients to use the space are Sidney Hilley & Anh Tran. Their project, LOOK is a shop and reading lounge with artist-made publications from local and national contributors. Their goal is to spark energy in the Camp Washington neighborhood and help the community find its voice.

Krueger's Tavern beer/wine/whiskey dinners

I know what you're thinking, isn't Krueger's that beer and burger place? Yes, its that place. But that doesn't take away the fact that the chefs at Krueger's are as elite as any. We attended their first beer dinner, yes beer at a beer bar. But they've also hosted a wine dinner and have a whiskey dinner coming up March 14th.
The event is held in the upstairs dining room of Krueger's. It makes for an intimate dinner and is a space where the chef and drink expert can converse with everyone and answer questions and share insights.
Between the amazing food and amazing drinks, you can't go wrong.
There are still tickets available for the March 14th Whiskey Dinner.
