Smooth Nitro
Smooth Nitro Coffee is located at 525 Vine St. under the escalators of the 525 Vine Center building. Owner Dan Thaler began Smooth Nitro with a bicycle cart visiting farmers markets and festivals. With the enthusiasm that people shown the cold brew coffee he decided to open a brick and mortar with a small counter space. Now I'm sure everyone has had a nitro coffee by now, at least one local roaster has been doing it for years. What I didn't realize is they still mix in some CO2 while Smooth Nitro uses pure N2O to charge the coffee. Whats the difference you may ask, it comes down to solubility. Since CO2 is 50 times more soluble in liquid than nitrogen, it produces larger bubbles. Nitrogen comes out of solution quickly, forming a fine fizz. Those smaller bubbles lend themselves to a buttery smooth mouth feel, and as cold brew coffee has a low acid content, no sugar or cream is really needed.
CO2 also forms an acid when it contacts water, maybe not a desirable trait when you want to keep the acidity of the cold brew coffee as low as possible.
The straight up nitro coffee is good, but you really have to try the flavored versions, Dark Side made with dark chocolate and Elevate were two of my favorites. Smooth Nitro also has nitro versions of tea and lemonade. I'm not a tea fan but the lemonade was very good.
One other thing I like about Smooth Nitro is they have partnered with Cate's Cookies and Lil's Bagels. Locals supporting locals.
Next time you are around Fountain Square do yourself a favor and try a nitro cold brew from Smooth Nitro, its the "coolest" way to get caffeinated..
