Cycle de Mayo

May is Bike Month with tons of bike related activities all over the city for every skill level and interest. I mean, check out this calendar, if you can't find one ride to participate in you just aren't trying.
But May or not, the Urban Basin Bicycle Club is riding around the city, never fear.
What is the Urban Basin Bicycle Club? Every Tuesday at 6:45 UBBC leaves Queen City Radio (at 12th and Central) for a ride around the urban basin. They are themed rides and they usually end at a local bar for refreshments. No special bike, clothes or equipment is needed, pump up the tires, jump on your creaky bike and head downtown.
Last week UBBC set out to explore the Eggleston Shared Pathway, a $765,000 half-mile extra wide sidewalk along Eggleston. "But 5chw4r7z", you may be thinking, "I've never seen more than two cars on Eggleston, why the shared path?" Well I'm with you there. Turns out the money is from the casino and has to be spent in that district.
What frustrated me about this is the city has been derelict in an ordinance to incorporate bike infrastructure when streets are paved. It isn't like the lines cost anymore, lining the roads for bike lanes is cost neutral, the line for the bike lane replaces the fog line on the edge of the road. And considering how often streets are resurfaced the city is going to have a 15 year hole in bike lane creation. OK, rant over, we can and do enjoy riding on the street and there is no better place to do that than in the basin where car speeds are slower than they would be on country roads.
Mark your calendars and join the UBBC every Tuesday!
Be warned, you may be chased by extinct raptors!
or not.
