The TQL Urban Race

I've said it before, the latest trend is the City is the new outdoors. Exibihit #10 or hundred is the Urban Race. No getting up at 4am so you can drive to a farm in the middle of nowhere to splash in mud. Oh No. Wake up at the crack of mid morning, walk over to Washington Park and you are ready to go. With an urban twist of course. Cars, dumpsters, tires and a cargo bin or two.

  1. Wow, that looks crazy! You know, I got woken up at 6 because they'd started loading in all that stuff, and then their soundcheck was at 7. At 10, we had the techno, national anthem and an air horn every 30 seconds -- by far one of the most obnoxiously loud events I've had the pleasure of hearing in the park.

    1. Towards the end of the race we were in the park and they would blow that air horn for the next group to start and I wondered what you made of that after a few hours.

  2. It was madness -- an event that was advertised as lasting 4 hours actually started, for all intents and purposes, at 6am and its afterparty ended just before 4pm. Usually the park events are just a nuisance to me, but this one actually exhausted me and reduced me to tears. Maybe it's no surprise that the organizers are based in the suburbs -- they may not realize that people do, in fact, live in OTR.

    1. OH wow, when you said pleasure I didn't realize you were being sarcastic. Dummy me.

    2. This is what the event sounded like in our bedroom. The focus on my camera had just stopped working, but you get the idea. My cat is ancient and almost completely deaf, but she seemed aware of the noise.

  3. i wish they had publicized it more. i know several people who would have participated. i never heard of it until the week it was happening, and that's only because my girlfriend started working at TQL. looks like a pretty fun race.

    1. I don't know what pre-registration was but I saw the entry for the day of the race was $95. I only knew about it because I'm on a thousand PR mailing lists.

    2. Funny, I felt like I'd been hearing about it forever! I think it was promoted pretty heavily within the local running community - there was a booth for it at the Flying Pig expo back in May, and I had already heard of it by then. I saw emails, tweets, and FB posts about it.

Preregistration was like $75 or $80 - really, really steep, or else my running buddies and I would probably have registered. The only race I've seen that costs more is a full marathon or the Tough Mudder.

    4. It's not just you, I didn't know anything about it either and I'd have loved to do it!

  4. I was going to do it because I hate the fact that every race starts at 7 am and this one was 10, but the registration fee was damn near $90. Thing is I dont see how climbing over cars makes this harder, just kind of makes it a pain in the ass. At least with tough mudders, warriror dashes and the like they are pushing parts of your body to the limit, this just looks annoying. If its an urban race we should be chased by out of control flaming hot dog carts, running though full pressure fire hydrants or being dogged by gang bangers.

  5. I did the early registration when I first heard about the race and paid $45 which is a great price for a obstacle race. I ran Muckfest a few months ago and paid $85 a few weeks prior. This was a great race - can't wait for the next one!

  6. I first heard about the race at the Flying Pig Expo and registered right away. I paid $45. It looks like the prices increased which is pretty typical. I waited too long to register for Muckfest and ended up paying $85 two weeks prior. Regardless this was an awesome race and I can't wait for next year!

  8. some of the teen criminals in my neighborhood would have probably done real well at this.
Seems like noisier/rowdier events should move down to the riverfront.
