Empower opens shop in OTR

The Marketer, a brand new, 64,000-square-foot commercial office building at 15. E 14th Street hosted a ribbon cutting yesterday morning. Well, it would be more accurate to say a pancake cutting. See Empower has six core values and they don't pay them lip service. Those core values appear iron clad and were repeated throughout the building. Getting back to the pancakes, Breakfast First is the first core value. Its about breakfast but not just about breakfast. If a day, a project or anything else begins with thoughtful purpose good things will follow.
The Marketer was built on an empty lot but is is connected to a very old existing building. The Hukon was saved at great expense and testifies to Empower's commitment to the OTR neighborhood as a steward and a good neighbor. The Yukon holds a number of state of the art conference and meeting rooms as well as a gym for employees.
Good things are happening for Empower, MediaPost’s 2016 Agency of the Year and one of the nations largest independent media agencies.

The 4^th floor, which they will eventually lease out has some mind blowing views. The only part of the tour that had me scratching my head was this, why didn't they skip the first floor and go two through four? Cleveland Arcades

Maybe people outside of Cleveland have never heard of The Arcade. It's a five-story structure which opened in 1890 and is a cross between a lighted courtyard and a commercial shopping street. It looks like one big building but the Arcade is a complex of three structures: two nine-story office buildings facing out to Euclid and Superior Avenues, connected via the five-story iron-and-glass-enclosed arcade. Today a Hyatt Hotel, which redeveloped the Arcade into a Hyatt Regency hotel, occupies the two towers and the top three floors of the atrium area. The two lower floors of the atrium area remain open to the public.
Even people who know about “The Arcade” in Cleveland, might not know there are actually two more. The Euclid arcade, with its white marble floors, white terra cotta walls, and sky-lit white barrel-vaulted ceiling. One hundered feet away from the Euclid is the Colonial Arcade which offers a different feel, sporting an iron and glass ceiling fine detailing on its balcony-level walls and fixtures.
The arcades are a throwback to a different time.

The Colonial Arcade was built in 1898.

The Euclid Arcade was constructed in 1911.

Streetcar Maintenance Facility

Or as the former Mayor Mallory refereed to it, C.O.A.S.T. the Center Of Advanced Streetcar Technology. A little bit of an inside joke for diehard streetcar supporters and a poke at its biggest opponents. Advanced maybe, but it was mostly a straight forward machine shop with some adaptions for a large vehicle like a streetcar. Almost everything is modular on the streetcar, when routine maintenance is needed the part is pulled off and replaced so the unit can quickly return to service and technicians aren't rushed while completing repairs.

A model of a PCC, the first standardized streetcar and also the last to run in Cincinnati.

The trucks don't have an axle allowing for the low floor design of our streetcar. They also don't swivle, they are fixed to the body and the articulation of the streetcar body allows it to take curves.

Star Wars and the Power of the Costume

In the better late than never category, I checked out the Museum Center's show finally. The Power of the Costume highlighted the thought process behind the costumes. A why and how if you will. It was all pretty amazing, even the costumes from episodes 1-3 which I have no recollection of because I erased them from my memory as fast as I could.

The bikini that launched a thousand battle cruisers, and young men's fantasies.

Once everyone saw what those little guys could do with rocks and logs, why didn't anyone hand them a blaster?

Do you watch Game of Thrones? When people ask me if a tattoo hurts I always tell them you have to pay the iron price. But this post is about riding bikes. Specifically, riding them up hills.
You can't pay the gold price, there is no way to buy yourself a ride up the hill, even if you have an expensive lightweight bike, you still have to pedal it up on your own.
What does riding a bike up a hill have to do with anything?
Hills are where the glory is, do you know who the best sprinter is?
No? But I bet you've heard of Pantani and Armstrong!
But we don't ride hills for glory, we're just normal people. We're riding them for ourselves.
The only way to know if you can do something, is to pay the iron price and do it!
