Durham Dept

The newest shop to open in Covington's burgeoning retail district centered around Pike St and Madison is Durham Dept. Durham Dept is a self described lifestyle retail concept dedicated to providing durable garments and goods built for the betterment of everyday. Currently Durham is stocked with solid basics, t-shirts, sweatshirts and jewelry.
It has seemed to me for awhile that Covington is quickly becoming a happening place. Of course it was a warm pleasant night but I couldn't get over the number of people I saw walking up and down Madison Ave and some of the side streets. On the surface I would guess that there is a critical mass of things to do that residents no longer have to travel for a night out, they're able to stay in their own neighborhood which is pretty cool.
But maybe that is me being naive? Someone will set me straight I have no doubt but I guess the current mood from some locals is it could crash and burn at any moment. Which reminds me of people I've talked to in Cincinnati who doubt things will change or get better. But I keep thinking of Covington as a neighborhood instead of the city it is, with infighting for resources among its 19 neighborhoods.
To me as an outsider seeing new retail and the existing arts is that Covington is just starting to simmer. But again, I don't have skin in the game.
At any rate after all that rambling, next time you're near Pike and Madison drop in and check out Durham Dept.

  1. It did crash and burn. Nearly 30 ground-level retailers/restaurants opened and quickly closed in downtown Covington and along Pike Stret over the past 2 years. Many of them needed grants from the city to open and, I guess, when the money ran out, so did the shops.
