Fountain Square. in 3-D
Journey to the Center of the Earth had some mixed results given the quality of the LCD screen. It was mostly ok, but after awhile I just pulled the glasses off and watched without. Kept the niece and nephews engaged the entire movie though, i was worried they'd get bored fast.

Vine-L Friday
I didn't get that at first
DUH!
OK I'm slow on the uptake sometimes. sue me!
Anyhow wicked hot Friday night and Ms 5chw4r7z is out with friends so I did a loop by myself.
What? Like I'm not going to run into someone I know or anyone incredibly interesting?
Yeah like that will ever happen in OTR.
I'm super into primitive/graffiti art, I'd have the condo packed with this if Ms 5chw4r7z's taste in art aligned with mine a little more.

AVS/Kevin White at William Joseph home, huge convo on if Sanford had kept it in his pants for one more day no one would have known or cared that he skipped town.

Parker Flats Friday :: get your ash downtown
I had meant for this to be a guys night, and after some confusion, mostly caused by me it was.
BUT the girls, realizing they had to light charcoal to grill anything, came scurrying back ruining our night.
But it worked out anyhow, they pretty much stayed upwind from us for the evening.

They don't care about the Reds.
They don't care.
Have I mentioned how awesome the TV is when its swung out on the deck?

After that Toronto home run, Kevin threw the cigar on the ground and jumped on it with extreme prejudice.
OK fine, he didn't
but I almost bit mine in half.

I remember the outrage I felt back on 9/11 when a major paper's headline was "America's Innocence Lost"
I was mad because, my thinking at the time was of all the things that happened over the history of the U.S. how innocent were we?
But in some quirk of prescient I couldn't quite touch, but back then could almost feel, and now today I know, we lost our innocence when Farrah Fawcett posed for that poster.
And now she's gone.
God help us all.

anonymous. a story
authentic trendiness
a contradiction?
I'm not sure, I'm not going to claim to know Fat Nick and Tony Heitz, but they have a passion about unheardof and its products.
And the trendiness part? anonymous is just a couple week pop-up shop, by definition trendiness is fleeting.
pretty cool idea I think, and a cool little addition to W 4th St.
Anyone notice a theme of what I love about the city?
THE STORY
Yep you hop into anonymous, grab a cool t-shirt and tennis shoes, the place disappears.
Everyone's all "where'd you get that?"
here we go.... this place downtown...t-shirts...skaters...but it's gone you missed it...

Civil Rights Game Youth Summit
A warm afternoon on Fountain Square last Saturday didn't stop people from filling up the Square. The kids were having a blast with batting and pitching practice, there was a SWAT team there showing off one of their vehicles, but the draw was baseball.

a split second later he tapped Phillips on the shoulder and asked, "is that 5chw4r7z?"

we got an ice cream cone and listened to Eric Davis moderate a question and answer session with Brandon Phillips and Jerry Hairston Jr.
You could hear the enthusiasm in their voices, these guys along with everyone else, are going places, as Hairston emphasized, Bruce is only 22, he's got a lot to learn, hes the real deal.
Don't give up on the Reds yet people.
I really like Phillips, I remember back from my Tribe days he was a good getter.

tight t-shirts were scarce in the Short North and it doesn't matter how awesome it is, it can always benifit from an ice cream injection
We were all starving and I think we took the easy way out eating at Bodega, it was good, but I had buyers remorse walking past Northstar, damn, why didn't I try harder to think of somewhere to eat?
Oh well, with like 80 beers on tap at Bodega I suffered through.

just strolling down the street, something caught Jackie's eye in the window of Substance and we walked in, it looked crazy expensive at first, and a couple of the nicer dresses were, but the sales were incredible. Jackie cleaned up and Ms. 5chw4r7z found an awesome dress for an outdoor wedding coming up. We got to talking and Christina, the owner, and she's from Cincinnati and knows our good friend Dan from Park+Vine.
How crazy is that? small world.
Thanks Christina for hooking everyone up!
How funny this was on a table in the shop next door to Jeni's?

ROAD TRIP!!!
Our good friend Jackie was in Columbus passing through, we couldn't let her get this close and not see her.
Funny as excited as I was, it was a really relaxing drive up, we were in the middle of Ohio with nothing but two iPhones, our wits and an occasional cow.
Ms 5chw4r7z did most of the driving, she was worried about my Fast making an appearance and doesn't enjoy 75 mph blasts down backroads.

this, this IS the most dangerous place in the world
Yeah, 2005 there is no way in hell I'm standing at the corner of 12th and Vine I'll give you that, but after sensationalizing the story for 1/2 hour that 3 minute story on Channel 9 was disgusting, data from early in this century doesn't tell the story of OTR the last 3 years.
Cherry picking the blocks to use, I bet we could make a case Anderson is the most dangerous place in the world, or even West Chester, so I call bullshit shenanigans.
Not serving wine at the festival we headed over to Lavomatic to cool off and grab further refreshment.
OOOOOOOO.....scary!!

Lavo is its just so easy, the times flies chit-chattin and drinking and being cool like us
even more scary people, that is dangerous as all get out there.

I'm sure you've all seen the story by now, I'm not rehashing it, but UrbanCincy did have this gem pulled straight off the website.

Gateway Quater Summer Celebration
Saturday dawned hot and humid, or as Frank said, less humid then Friday, given Friday was off the chart, what is less?
Still stinkin hot. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be with a breeze blowing.
They did a good job with the mixture of vendors, and the setting was great, clean crisp tents, some incredible arts and crafts.
And beer.
I saw all the usual suspects, I was there right smack in the middle of the day so I hope later on some people who've never been down to The Q before showed up and checked it out.

The newly engaged BuyCincy, and his very cute and bubbly fiance Katy.
Thanks Kurt!

Parker Flats Friday
Living downtown is about nothing if its not about party's so if you're a party pooper or curmudgeon, it might not be for you.
Tripping the light fantastic at THE AWARD WINNING Parker Flats in Blake's condo last Saturday was an awesome experience 5 stories up, downtown lights and all.
Far out.

I like how, in the above picture each condo has a different color glow to it, its own personality somehow reflecting, but I'm not sure how,its owner.

Fountain Square Parking
Not Reds parking, not downtown parking.
What does this tell me?
Fountain Square events have gotten big enough that there is a demand for Fountain Square parking.
Not that there isn't parking, but there are enough people showing up who aren't familiar with downtown creating a need for this sign.

Red, Pink and Blue Event
I attended a blogger/PR event hosted by CincyChic last night leading up to the Red, Pink and Blue Event starting June 25th.
While I won't be able to attend, I do have tickets, leave a comment if interested and I'll get them to you.
Here is Candy of Spa Around the World in Eighty Days to explain, one caveat, the background noise was epic, you'll need to crank the speakers.
What she said basically was the “Red” represents heart health, the “Pink” represents breast health and the “Blue” represents diabetes health. The three non-profit organizations benefiting from this event series are The American Heart Association, Pink Ribbon Girls and Spa4Diabetes.

Van Eck phreaking and the fundamental theorem of calculus don't mean shit when facing a Unibroue

Unibroue looks awesome good
and it tastes it too
something hit me in the head

Kevin kept disappearing down a tunnel like it was freak'n Bletchley Park or something and when he'd return he'd have another bottle, now I'm not going to brag about how much i drank here, au contraire, I actually drank very little, but this stuff was all like 10 - 11% alcohol so it didn't take much to kick my ass.
The Unibroue kicked my ass like America Shaftoe kicking Randy's ass. But I digress, this stuff was potent.

charcoal in dark beer
at least that's what i tasted
am i on the floor?

Bobby Shaftoe knew he wasn't the brightest bulb in the socket. He knew he wasn't the master of all trades.
But he did know one thing, he only had to do one thing and do it to the best of his ability, and that was simply, do what he was told.
And that's what this Fireball Meade does, it does one thing and does it very well.
Its a dessert beer meant to be sipped, when I brought this up to my nose the bouquet instantly cleared my sinuses, and each sip was a bite of very hot cinnamon.

If this is all confusing, here's the back story, Michelle from My Wine Education and her very beer knowledgeable husband Kevin hosted a beer tasting, and along with Tom and Carla from hoperatives we did some serious beer damage which degenerated into a very drunk discussion about and around Neal Stephenson. How drunk? This picture isn't out of focus, this is how it actually looked driving back into Ohio.

Cincinnati Pride 2009
I've been invited to a party in Clifton every year and finally this year was able to go. I had been to Pride in Columbus before so had a pretty good idea what to expect, of course this one had the advantage of tons of people I actually knew, straight and otherwise hanging out and supporting their friends which I thought really cool. The host, lives in this gigantic, beautiful historic house that is just mind-blowing and he had a super spread laid out, this was only a tiny part of it.

win a date with a rollergirl? where do you sign up for that?

There were massive crowds in Clifton

To the organizers, I have one suggestion for next year that could really make this parade, two words; topless lesbians.[where: 45202]cincinnati ohio downtown

OTR/Gateway Summer Celebration

Last Final Friday, two weeks ago now, wheres the time go, walking around OTR having a blast, tons of people out, and then the next day some condo tours, just marveling and taking in the amount of people out enjoying the nice weekend.
Walking in and out of stores and tweeting about it and then I got this reply;

This is what everyone, retailers, entertainers and home builders are fighting against. I guess I don't notice because I'm always looking for the next big thing, I love the new and unexpected and what I always call The Story.
So you went to the mall and bought a shirt. YAWN how exciting for you.
BUT instead, how about,
WOW, I found this cool shirt at this quirky little shop in the Q, then bought some plants next door, and got this cool patio set across the street!
Man you can walk to all kinds of cool there.
We even sat on a rooftop having cocktails and lunch!
Now that's a story!
So now, if you want the new, the unexpected, The Story get to 12th and Vine June 20th and see what all the scuttlebutt is about.
Bands, food and drink vendors, and some local artists.
Click on the icon below for more details.
Don't be skeer'd, be surprised.

the good news.

Parker Flats recieved a Jurors' Special Mention award from the American Institute of Architects, Cincinnati Chapter.
Parker Flats, designed by PDT Design, was honored with Juror's Special Mention at the first annual CORA Residential Design Awards. The Congress of Residential Architecture and AIA Cincinnati recognized the project as excellence in residential design.

bacochoco-cookie

How did this all start? bacon is a huge meme and a force of nature on the internets.
In that spirit, Curt of Bucky's Barbecue & Bread whipped up a batch of bacon chocolate chip cookies. Chip of course is purely subjective as these where more like chocolate chuck cookies. It was really subtle though, the bacon bits were small, the cookies, gigantic, and they complimented the beer,Party Town's "Rye 75" brought by Tom and Carol of Hoperatives which we then got a little loopy on.

Cincinnati Supper Club: The Twenty Third
Bianca and Shawn hosted last night in their Hyde Park home. The served up a South African Braai style dinner that was fabulous.
It still amazes me and reinforces the idea behind the these dinners, we have a few new people every time and they all have a blast.
People still crave shared genuine experiences and a good story.
Thanks everyone who participated, if you'd like to get in on this, trek over to the Cincinnati Supper Club website, leave a comment and I'll add you to the mailing list, or add the blog to your RSS feeder, they fill up fast.

Sunday in the Park(ing lot) with Jay
The mural, painted and completed over the span of Fringe, looks awesome, if you haven't seen it yet, make sure when you come to the OTR Celebration you walk over and check it out.
Its cool they included Jay, influential in getting the Know Theater to where it is today.

Dan Babcock and Matthew Dayler spearheaded this massive effort of Art Academy students, a huge round of applause to everyone, good work guys.

Empire of feathers @Fringe

OK, Fringe is all over now, so this review does you absolutely no good, but Empire blew my mind.
OK not hard to do I know but still, a very ambitious undertaking that they totaly nailed.
What was it about? That would require watching the whole play.
You know those dreams, where totally mundane activities happen, but under and followed by the most bizarre circumstances? take that and mix it up with Lost with a touch of Rose Bud and you wouldn't be far off.
A world war between the Mondos and the Natzers, fueled by the powerful Manhatten family profiting off it.
The newest heir, Archibald, negotiates an end to the war that has lasted 400 yrs. everyone resists this new found peace as Archibald strikes out for adventure.
You thought it was weird up til now it only gets more confusing as the play progresses and they come across and save the life of Rifle, a born killing machine and also a Natzer.
In the hands of someone lesser, this could have been a disaster but Messrs Seiriol Davies, Karim Muasher and Ryan Underbakke pull off the, ah, unpullable? These guys are going places, by far the most talented actors at Fringe.

From what I've heard this was the best year attendance wise for Fringe.
But not only that, the really bad shows were absent this year, I didn't hear anything bad about any a single one, so imagine pulling that off, 31 incredible, life altering, water cooler talking, coffee shop stopping shows.
Plus visual fringe movie screenings, fine art, the mural painted on the Know Theater over the length of Fringe and it adds up to an incredible two weeks to be a Cincinnatian.
Thank you guys and here's to next year![where:1120 jackson st cincinnati ohio 45202]cincinnati ohio finge Festival know theatre cincinnati ohio otr over rhine jackson street underground

nothings is so bad, that an ice cream can't make better
heading out I stopped, just like you do at the ATM, grabbed some cash and ran.
it wasn't until we got to the gas station that I realized I had left the card in the machine.
what to do, drive back and look for it?
torn I frantically began calling the bank, thank god for the iPhone and websurfing I easily found the number. figuring the machine would suck the card back in I went back and forth struggling with the decision and decided not to drive back. we got to Panera and reached a live person at the same time.
card canceled, a bagel and coffee ordered I then preceded to dump half the coffee in the car.
At that point Ms. 5chw4r7z decided it would be a good idea for her to drive.
nearing Columbus she made an executive decision to hit jeni's ice cream, seemed like a good idea to take a break from driving.
awesome decision making it was.

this sounded really good and the sample was delirious, delicious even but I thought a whole scoop might be too much

Mottainai Lofts
The Gateway Quarter threw open its doors, literally last week, these lofts were incredible, I wasn't exactly having condo envy because nothing is going to match up to Parker Flats but these would be a close second. Ikea kitchens and Rookwood tiles in the kitchen and baths.

UPDATE:
Mottainai was named “Best Residence under 3,500 square feet” in Cincinnati Magazine’s 7th Annual Interior Design Competition. Award winners were announced Saturday, September 26, 2009 at a breakfast held at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal.

No Stranger Than Home @Fringe

A one woman show, more of a spoken essay than a play or theatrical production, it reminds me of a few well traveled friends I have, sitting around and telling stories.
Culture shock and misunderstandings are the main focus of the stories as you could imagine, they ranged from funny to deeply personal, some which couldn't have been easy to share.
The common theme, people asking "do you miss home" or "how is this different from home" and her question, what is home, her divorced parents couldn't have been more different, a hippy mom in St Paul and a conservative father in the SF Bay area.
From trying to teach English using family trees to kids from the Sudan who have 3 mothers, 30 odd siblings and pairs of grandparents to the odd witch doctor remedies for a twisted ankle, Katherine has lived, survived more than a few crazy situations.

Assholes and Aureoles @Fringe
Assholes and Aureoles was hands down the best Fringe show yet.
From the first line to the last A&A was non-stop high-energy.
Presented as a series of 6 one acts, each of which either had a twist at the end or left you guessing, just what did happen there?
Karen and Diane had this down, excellent timing and delivery for every line.
If you can only see one show this Fringe, this should be the one.
If you have a multi-pass, see it multiple times!
OH! There's only two shows left, so go see it twice!

Body Language II: PHYS. ED @Fringe

Body Language's stated goal was an exploration of how we come to view our bodies in the dreaded landscape of gym class.
A lofty goal indeed which they fell a little short.
Not that they didn't try but I think they were ambitious and the cast too large seemingly trying to encompass every possible high school stereotype.
When it was good, such as the rare moments when the drama teacher was on stage, it was really good.
But when it was bad, the times they stooped to lecturing....... it was painful to watch.
The cool part, the play is set in a gym so they show it, in a gym!
The uncool part? if you aren't in the front row and/or 7' tall you aren't going to see much, and the cavernous gymnasium swallows the show up.
And spits nothing out.
I would say if you are only seeing one show this Fringe, this shouldn't be it, but if you have a multi-show pass, its worth checking out, but its one of the shows running over an hour and is set, at the YWCA about 4 blocks from the Know, leave yourself time if seeing another show afterwards.

Final fantastic freakin Friday
A confluence of events resulted in an OTR and downtown overflowing with people last Friday.
Final friday, the Fringe Festival, Indie Summer on Fountain Square and Park+Vines 2nd anniversary party.
It was off the hook trying to wade through throngs of people filling the sidewalks, it had me thinking, "this is Cincinnati? OTR?" how crazy awesome is that.
Tons and tons of people we knew milling around, we took in a show, walked up and down Main St, the weather was nice, just a magical fantastic night.

All the shops in the "Q" were swamped, the mix of retail with stuff you cannot get anywhere else is spot on, this is the place to go for unique.
Ms. 5chw4r7z scored a Sigg she's been eyeballin forever.

If you remember I mentioned art?
I was talking specificly about fine art, but with Fringe going on, are you up for some performance art?
These guys were there all night playing strip poker.
