This is my favorite non-traditional Christmas song ever.
A happy little ditty of dysfunction, misplaced expectations and domestic violence.

Ms.5chw4r7z has boxes (and not small ones either) of old pictures. It always feels like a treasure hunt going through them. One thing young kids will get to experience less and less in the future, that thrill of digging through yellowed old pictures.
These are some of my favorite Christmas pictures of her.
Interestingly, we still display that tree topper.
she still looks exactly like this

The thing about Neon's is it was a place I could go when I had no other plans and guaranteed I would see 10-12 people I knew. Now there are other places like that, but Neon's has always been my security blanket. It's amazing how much and also how little the place has changed since I first blogged about it in April 2010.
Of course its not all about me, back in those days when twitter was brand new I was meeting all kinds of new people in real life there that I knew online. Many of these people were young 20-somethings at the time and practically grew up there.
It really feels, with Neon's closing, and Park+Vine closing, like the end of a chapter in OTR. Before, people were there because they cared about community and they wanted to be part of something. Now, OTR is more about being there because its the cool place to be, or a place you can brag to people you braved because it is so sketchy. And there is nothing wrong with that, like I keep telling everyone, no one gets a gold star for being first.
It does kind of hurt though seeing people instagraming and carrying on totally oblivious to the fact that the place wouldn't be there the next time they tried to visit and they probably wouldn't even care.
Neon's is gone but the people aren't and the people really are what make a neighborhood, so on to bigger and better and cooler things.
Don't take anything for granted.

Durhan Dept celebrated their one year anniversary slinging unique and awesome goods in Covington. I still love the fact that their downtown area is beginning to really blow up and is a ten minute or so bike ride from downtown Cincinnati. This year though is a contrast to last year. Remember how warm it was? People were out walking around and I was floored at the street life. Luckily though inside Durham the action was hot and everyone warm and buzzed.
One of the more popular stories of the Lucky Cat or Maneki-neko is that a wealthy feudal lord was taking shelter under a tree near a temple during a thunderstorm. The lord saw the temple priest's cat beckoning to him and followed and a moment later the tree was struck by lightning. The lord became friends with the priest and the temple became prosperous.
This is why you see Lucky cats near the entrances to Asian restaurants, the beckon people in and are thought to bring prosperity.
You can see hundreds of versions of these waving cats at the Lucky Cat museum in the Essex Studio off E. McMillan St. They're recently moved to a larger space in the Essex building which is amazing because the place is still overflowing with cats. The museum is open 3-6pm Tuesday - Saturday but the best time is during one of Essex Studio's art walks when they are open until 10pm.

There is no law that says when the sun disappears and the temperatures drops the bike has to be put away. Case in point, Margy and Mel's annual Bright Ride. The Bright Ride is always an opportunity to dress up the bike and yourself for a fun ride around the urban core. And judging by the reactions of bystanders on the sidewalks, the ride is just as fun for them as it is the riders.

Ever wonder what the inside of a power plant looks like? Me too, especially since I ride past here every morning on the bike and see the inside of it all lit up. U.C. Sustainability hosted a tour that was educational and enlightening. All that equipment in front you can see lit up at night? Those are chillers that supply chilled water for air conditioning throughout campus. They run all year as even server rooms and labs need to be cooled in the winter.
What you can't see and what I really wanted to see were the two gas turbines they use for power generation. Gas turbines are really just jet engines bolted to a frame and connected by gears to a generator. The turbines are rated at 12.5 MW and could supply enough electricity for about 6,200 homes and burn natural gas. Unfortunately it wasn't permitted to photograph the turbines which is the whole reason I wanted to go. But it turns out the plant is even more amazing than I realized it would be. Downstream from the turbines fuel is injected into the 1,000°f exhausted and heated to nearly 1,800°f. This creates the steam that is pumped throughout campus to heat buildings. The most amazing thing that steam does though is to power a 20MW steam turbine that could power 10,000 homes at full capacity! Its amazing how every last bit of energy is squeezed out of the turbines for max efficiency.
