I (still) believe in Father Christmas

Christmas 2015

...the message there is that faith in something that is not true, as long as it is faith in goodness, is worth the huge cover-up, while disbelieving leads to all types of evil behavior such as scooping pennies off the poor, scaring little children, and being a general stick in the mud.

A Fairytale of New York

My favorite non-traditional Christmas song ever.
A happy little Christmas ditty of co-dependence, misplaced expectations and domestic violence.

Watershed Distillery and the Old Fashioned

Greg Lehman, one of two founders of Watershed Distillery was in Cincinnati to launch Watershed's newest product, the Old Fashioned. Along with Watershed's Lehman, Alex Elkins and Brandon Faris of Filmmakers Drinking Bourbon hosted a live podcast and discussed the Old Fashioned specificly and Watershed Distillery in general. One of the reasons for this product as related by Mr. Lehman was portability. Normally he said, you'd have to haul a spirit and all the required ingredients to a party, then spend time making cocktails. With Watershed's Old Fashioned in a bottle all that is required is ice and an orange peel.
The value of these events for vendors and also people like me is, education, for whatever reason I had no idea Watershed made bourbon. The reason I found is because the bourbon ages for years so it's just now slowly coming onto the market. Greg Lehman told me they always joked the vodka and gin supported their bourbon habit.
If you've never heard of them before, Watershed Distillery is a Columbus, Ohio based distiller founded by partners Dave Rigo and Greg Lehman. Watershed currently offers other products beside the Old Fashioned; vodka, gin, bourbon and bourbon barrel gin. Watershed's spirits can be found at many of Cincinnati's liquor stores including Staggerlee's in Corryville and also The Party Source.

One of Watershed's other niche products is Nocino, a black walnut liqueur. I didn't have an opportunity to try it but Nocino is uniquely Ohio spirit. The black walnuts used are all harvested within a one week period in June before their hard shell forms. The walnuts are soaked in vodka for a couple months before being bottled. When asked about how he would use it Mr. Lehman mentioned that it was very good on ice cream or paired with the bourbon barrel gin. Nicole Gunderman from The 51% suggested using it in a Black Russian which got a pretty good reaction from everyone.

The 2015 Holiday BRIGHT Ride

Lots of bike and Christmas pictures this week. Who knew the weather was going to be amazing enough to still be riding around in shorts halfway through Decemer? 100+ festively dressed and decorated bikes took to the streets Saturday night for a couple loops around OTR and downtown.
If you want to join the fun follow Margy and Mel Ride Bikes on facebook.

Cincinnati's Initial Santa Rampage!!

The first Santa Rampage happened this past Saturday in Cincinnati. A quiet subdubed rampage. Along for the ride was Kevin Hardman Executive Director at Bublr Bikes and Launch Director at Midwest Bikeshare in Milwaukee. Kevin told me in Milwaukee the Santa Rampage has been gaining steam, and Santas, and they had over 2500 riders this year. While that would be incredible to see in Cincinnati, I can't imagine thousands of bikes, it was nice and relaxing riding around with 20-25 bike riding Santa attired people.

Durham Dept

The newest shop to open in Covington's burgeoning retail district centered around Pike St and Madison is Durham Dept. Durham Dept is a self described lifestyle retail concept dedicated to providing durable garments and goods built for the betterment of everyday. Currently Durham is stocked with solid basics, t-shirts, sweatshirts and jewelry.
It has seemed to me for awhile that Covington is quickly becoming a happening place. Of course it was a warm pleasant night but I couldn't get over the number of people I saw walking up and down Madison Ave and some of the side streets. On the surface I would guess that there is a critical mass of things to do that residents no longer have to travel for a night out, they're able to stay in their own neighborhood which is pretty cool.
But maybe that is me being naive? Someone will set me straight I have no doubt but I guess the current mood from some locals is it could crash and burn at any moment. Which reminds me of people I've talked to in Cincinnati who doubt things will change or get better. But I keep thinking of Covington as a neighborhood instead of the city it is, with infighting for resources among its 19 neighborhoods.
To me as an outsider seeing new retail and the existing arts is that Covington is just starting to simmer. But again, I don't have skin in the game.
At any rate after all that rambling, next time you're near Pike and Madison drop in and check out Durham Dept.

three years of caffeinated goodness

People are always wondering the best of, what is the best? Take for example coffee shops.
These days Cincinnati has an embarrassment of incredible coffee shops. So what really is the best? An easier qualifier would be what is the favorite coffee shop. That is a question everyone can answer instantly. Actually you don't even have to ask, some people (looks down and shuffles feet) will tell you their favorite unprompted.
Which brings us to Collective Espresso. They just celebrated three years and counting in business. I like the aesthetic and the fact they carry Deeper Roots Coffee, another of my favorites, as well as quality beans from Louisville and Chicago among other places.
If you haven't been yet, Collective Espresso is located on Woodward St just steps from Main St. And what are you waiting for, get over there and experience it yourself. Or if OTR isn't convient for you, there are two other locations, downtown in the CAC and on Cluxton in the Northside.

vintage Christmas

I never tire of these pictures, the first of Ms. 5chw4r7z's mom, and one of her aunt. Downtown Cleveland, I think it was Higbee's but I'm not sure.
