I don't think people are hateful rather than insensitive and ignorant. These stupid events marginalize racial groups just like wearing red face at an Indians game or being some dumb frat boy deciding that celebrating MLK is clever by having everyone dress up in afro, black face and eating watermelon. You ask any of these idiots what the the true meaning of Cinco de Mayo is and they wouldn't have a clue what to say in return. I don't really think it's cute to see idiots getting drunk and pissing on the sidewalk for St.Patrick's day but leave it to good ol' America to make turn days like these into models of stereotypical behavior. I for one am the least uptight but living in California and working side by side with Latino's, appreciating their culture and way of life, I find it really embarrassing seeing a bunch of clueless dolts basically making fun of them. Now this is just my opinion but I've live in California for 15 years. Come out to the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland with that stupid sombrero and fake mustache and prance around their hood and see how it turns out. kevin krogerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09354831764564456041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174432287932211168.post-36113884319582341562013-05-09T15:29:41.220-04:002013-05-09T15:29:41.220-04:00Leprechauns and santa are fictitious characters, n...Leprechauns and santa are fictitious characters, not caricatures of a nationality, race or ethnic group.

To be hateful? Nobody wore sombreros or ponchos --or even used Cinco de Mayo as a platform for binge drinking. Funny, I'd never been referred to as a "Mick" until I came to Cincinnati. Of course it's the American way to create consumer binging events --any excuse to celebrate a "holiday."

http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/05/05/loc_party05.html

And, of course there's many more cultural holidays to misappropriate.... Does Cappel's sell black beards, Hasidic curls, and tzitzits? Maybe we can get a diamond company to sponsor! With all of the Jewish holidays on the calendar, we'll have plenty of excuses to get boozed up frat party style and wear those furry hats (who doesn't love a shtreimel?) . Or maybe an Indian holiday can join the party. Turbans anyone? That's an Indian thing, right? Oh, Sikhs? Whatever, it's all in the name of fun, right?John McDanielnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174432287932211168.post-71822372857613533892013-05-09T12:51:06.886-04:002013-05-09T12:51:06.886-04:00Methinks you might be a little uptight.Methinks you might be a little uptight.derek Baumanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08079547905862665595noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5174432287932211168.post-41302355420936915132013-05-09T07:27:43.740-04:002013-05-09T07:27:43.740-04:00The link to the event photo booth below is embarra...The link to the event photo booth below is embarrassing. Over and over again people from other cultures who come to Cincinnati to work for P&G et al talk about a certain lack of sensitivity here. Day of the Dead face painting on Cinco de Mayo? Talk about cultural illiteracy. Sombreros, ponchos, maracas, etc. and mugging with tequila bottles and faking being passed out asleep? I know people who are offended by this display. The overwhelmingly white crowd of downtown hipsters had better show some class or they will be as despised as the now passé Park Slope hipsters in Brooklyn --Cincinnati being behind the times per Twain and all.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.426825440746212.1073741825.154946101267482&type=1John McDanielnoreply@blogger.com
