The Grand City Experiment

From the Grand City Experiment's website;

"Grab coffee with the new guy on your street. Heck, add a shot of espresso. Now what if 100 people in our city did that today? Think of the ripple effect we could create together if thousands of us did one simple challenge each day for an entire month. Everyone in our city could feel at home. Join us in October as we perform daily challenges to make our city feel a little more like a community. We call it The Grand City Experiment...Welcome Home."

Ever hear of people having a hard time meeting people? Having trouble feeling a connection to the city?
Yes? No?
The Grand City Experiment aims to see if it is possible to impact an entire population in a positive manner to address these issues.
But it won't work if its the usual suspects, they're already connected and making differences in their circles.
Get in on the experiment, whether you do every challenge or just one, it could make all the difference.
What will your Cincinnati look like at the end of October?
Sign up for the challenge now at The Grand City Experiment.

Portland

Go By
A few quick thoughts about our stop in Portland. I was amazed how egalitarian all forms of transportation were. When we first got into town we would walk up to intersections and wait because cars were approaching. No matter how many times it happened it would catch me off guard when the cars would stop, right of way or not and wait for us to cross the street as we stood there looking stupidly at them.
The one time we almost did get run down it reminded me of Cincinnati. Someone came flying out of a parking garage only looking one way because nobody in their right mind would be walking on a sidewalk. I glanced at their plates as the went past, Washington, so they have mentality of the rest of the country. Other than that it was kind of amazing how quiet it was, none of the car horns you hear from frustrated drivers in Cincinnati.
All in all pretty cool.

Five Points Biergarten

Pretty cool stuff for a small neighborhood get together held four times a year. Nick Lachey was seen last year enjoying a beer and we just saw John Sanphillippo of San Francisco checking out the action and taking pictures and videos for his blog GRANOLA SHOTGUN. There I found a cool little story and analogy about Economic Hunting and Gardening in Cincinnati. Basically the difference between big ticket economic projects and small ticket projects. Which does more good in the long run? I would argue that these small changes happening right now in Walnut Hills will pay larger dividends down the road than a casino ever will.

The Hearth Room

In response to overwhelming requests for private events are her various bars Molly Wellmann, along with her partners has opened The Hearth Room.
The Hearth Room is located at 125 W 4th St is just a few blocks from Fountain Square. Why would The Hearth Room succeed when a couple other tries at an event space in that space have failed? I'm going to go out on a limb and say the secret ingredient will be Ms. Wellmann.

Urban Basin Bicycle Ride

Every Tuesday on Fountain Square the Urban Basin Bicycle Club meets at 6:30 for a spin around the city. If you've been meaning to join the ride, don't wait, we're running out of daylight fast and only have a couple more rides most likely.
The rides usually aren't this long but they rode out to Spring Grove Cemetary which on Tuesdays in September is closed to cars. They welcome people walking and biking to explore the grounds. I think everytime I'm there I see something new.
So off we went, a protected bike lane on Central Parkway to Marshall, then down to Spring Grove with its bike lanes. A nice relaxing ride.
